Hello once again. From what I've read, my fiancee, who has recently arrived on a K-1 visa, should apply to get her SS card after being here 2 weeks. However, is there a way I can call to make sure she is in the database, that way I don't waste my time at the Social security office in case she can't get her card yet. Should I call the toll-free SS number? Or do I just have to go to the office after 2 weeks and hope her name is already in the database. I rather make sure before I go to the Social security office, because it can be a long wait and I dont want to be there for nothing. Please inform, thanks

Don't worry it will be in there after the two weeks. Just get there early when they open to minimize the wait.

It's time consuming to be sure. However, there are some things you can do to try and minimize the wait. They may not be what you can do. I'll share with you what I did. "Your mileage may vary."

Since the office wasn't very far from my company's branch office, I dropped by one day to see the times on the door. Then I went when it opened. I asked the guard (there will be one) questions like for my case what do I do, when is it busiest, if I get here when it opens how long could I wait, etc. At this office, they allow you to make appointments; however I didn't do that. Then I went and actually waited after pulling a ticket and spoke to a lady at one of the windows to find out what I needed. We went a few days later and the lady at the window the first time didn't say a birth certificate. However, the day we both went, the lady processing the application was kind enough to say if we came back that same day with the birth certificate to come back to her window and she'd finish the processing. We rushed home and came back. NP. The SS card will have a statement that the SS card doesn't approve employment; you can only do that with the work authorization (aka EAD) or the green card or green card approval stamp in the passport before the green card arrives.

BTW: after AOS approval, you should apply again for a new SS card and it will not have the statement of needing work approval.

Hope that helps someone.

Nope. You have to show up in the local office. I tried to do that last week and they said nope.

 We just waited two weeks and it was a breeze, Claudeth got her card a week later.

We waited the two-weeks, and of course, Jenalyn wasn't in the system yet. But apparently that is not a deal-buster either, they still accepted the application, and as long as her application matches the records from USCIS, the card will be issued. Just takes a month to get the card instead of a couple weeks.

Hi, I have a question on this I hope you have the answer for: I understand that you don't get the SS card right away when you apply for it, but do they give you your number the same day so you can start using it? The reason I ask about this is that I will need the number to be added to my fiance's (husband by that time) insurance.

Thanks!

E&K,

No, you won't. They may tell you that you do, at first, but when pushed and someone knowledgeable gets involved the insurance company will be able to add you to his policy without you having a SSN.

Insurance companies, and many other entities, like to use the SSN as an ID number for people because lacking a National ID a SSN is the most common thing that virtually all USCs have. But lacking one, the insurance company will make up a number in the proper format that they can use for you until you do get a SSN.

.... I will need the number to be added to my fiance's (husband by that time) insurance.

Thanks!

Not necessarily. Hopefully, yeah, but in our case it wasn't there. So, should this happen to you (the OP) be sure you follow up with them and make sure they keep checking to see that you are in the system, because in our case we filed for the SSN in June and they didn't even send their followup thing to verify that James could actually have a SSN until NOVEMBER (despite repeated calls by us and their promises to call back and being hung up on by them). By that time we had an EAD and it didn't matter, but I'd hope that if that happens to anyone else they can fix it in a sooner timeframe that we did.

Could someone answer a couple of questions? My fiance arrived last week, we are now married. First, can she apply for a SS card? Second, can she apply for a drivers license or state id card?...thanks
