What Happens After Filing the N-400?

At all the other stages along the immigration road, K-1, K-3, AOS, AP, Removal of Conditions, there were sign posts, things we were all waiting for and/or asking about. I don't see much of that on the Citizenship Forum. So I'm asking, what happens after filing the N-400? Do we check the mail daily for an NOA? What about RFE's? And of course no step would be complete without Biometrics. Or do we just wait for notification of an interview date? Does that happen within the 90 day period before eligibility or can we relax and know we have at least three months before anything is going to happen?

And they say there is no such thing as a dumb question.

Yep you wait and check your mailbox. You'll get a reciept saying that INS recieved your N-400, then after that another one to schedual your Fingerprints, then when that one is done, another one to schedual your interview date, and then depending on your situation possibly another one with the oath letter and schedual for your oath ceremony.

So yes get used to the mailbox and try not to move...

Thanks. So it is the usual - waiting for NOAs and Biometrics. Looks like a three to four month process thru NSC. I think we will move again before filing and then sit tight. It will be nice when my wife gets her citizenship. No more worrying about address changes, biometrics, waiting for stuff and hoping you won't get an RFE.

Yes, after filing for N-400... just wait for the interview date. Mine is the longest wait I believe. I have moved once, thankfully it did not cause any problem. I even received a notice for N-400 interview for Jan 29, 2007 and then after a week, a cancellation letter, and then after two weeks another schedule for March 5. So anything can still happen  and I am just waiting :)

Yep everyone story is different, I would have had my USC in just over 2 months, but my interview was schedualed a week before my 3 years was up so he said he couldn't swear me in. So got my oath finally, 4 months total for me. I've read others who have been waiting over a year for their oath after the interview.

So seems the biometrics and interview comes fairly on time, it's the wait after from the interview to the oath that can be very lenghthy and in limbo, as your reciept number generally won't even be recorded in the system so you can't even check up on your status...

So it is the usual - waiting for NOAs and Biometrics. Looks like a three to four month process thru NSC.

The naturalization timeline is not dependant on the Service Center; your timeline will be directly related to your District Office.

Our process went so:

File N-400

Receive receipt NOA establishing filing date

Receive Biometrics appointement letter (generated exactly one week after NOA)

Attend biometrics

Receive interview letter, confirm same-day oath potential

Attend interview

Attend oath ceremony

CIS is committed to completing naturalizations inside of 6 months.
