When will he be eligible for Visa?

Trying to help a good friend of ours understand this very confusing process! And please excuse my ignorance and lack of correct terminology!

His mom petitioned for him as an LPR but then she got her citizenship and was able to complete whatever process is completed to expedite the request now that she's a citizen. He is an over 21 unmarried son and his I130 was approved on April 19, 2012. From what I have been able to figure out from this site and the Department of State site is that they are just barely processing April 2007 visas and they only process 1-2 years worth each year so I told him that he should expect to wait at least another 3-5 years before he will come up. He said his sister called and they told her that he should be up before the end of the year but I'm just not sure that she understood correctly because that seems pretty quick compared to all the stuff I've researched.

Any insight into this would be very helpful! I'm going to call as well and see if I can get more information but I know there's lots of people who've been through this and now what realistically he should expect.

He'll wait until his PD is current. For Family based 1 preference (unmarried adult son of USC) they're currently processing those petitions filed in 22APR07.

No one can get him this visa by the end of the year. His sister probably didn't understand correctly - they may have said I-130 will be approved by then, but he will be waiting for his PD to be current.

Also, he better not get married as that would add another 3 years to the wait time...

Ok is the April 07 date the date of filing or date of approval? This may change things as I believe his petition was filed way back in 2010 or possibly earlier.

no, it's the priority date, more or less when immigration receives the i130, the date freezes, and that becomes the priority date

on the approval of the i130, it says priority date

so if it was filed in 2010, there is still a few years of waiting, never the end of this year

The current PD in the F2b category according to the Visa Bulletin is July 7, 2007.

Your friend's PD is 2010.

He has another 2-3 years of waiting. Its 2017 for him.

Thanks everyone! I knew that there was no way it was going to be ready by this year, our government just doesn't work that fast. He's sad of course but better to expect a long wait and have it come earlier then think it's this year and be wondering what the heck is taking so long!
