What are the chances of me getting a visa with a medical issue.

I have been to the states dozens of times and even own a home there now.

Unfortunately I lost the plot last yet, got severely depressed and attempted to take my life. It failed, and I went to the doctors, then onto psychologists, and finally after trying to take my life again in january of this year into the care of the mental health unit. Things are on the up now, I have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, my medication is working fine and ill be back to work soon. Im hoping to put all this behind me but....

Renewal of my ETSA was declined due to the medical question, as I have been a threat to myself. I have run through the visa application but it looks to me like it could also be declined for the same reason, and a waiver might not be possible.

Any ideas on what actually might happen, and if there are any docs etc I could get together to try to make a good case. Its not going to help that I still have bad anxiety so going down to London, and doing the interview will be a challenge in itself.

My first through is that if you can not manage London how will you manage USA?

They will need to see documentation from your medical team, you may be referred to a Consulate Doctor.

Tourist visa is iffy with any mental issues

buying medical insurance is/would be required

for K1 or cr1 & 5, but as a tourists not such a easy

thing, the US has laws about mental issues in all

petitions...then they wonder if U get ill who pays?

No harm trying though

Thanks, oddly enough going to the states doesnt bother me at all, Im with my wife at all times and have done it dozens of times. As we are going to our house, its just like going home (our other home).

Ill see what I can get from the specialist, its not going to help that the one ive been seeing has just left and the new one starts next week but hopefully they can give me a letter and I can see what they put and take it from there.

Just to add, the section that bothers me is

to have a physical or mental disorder and behavior associated with the disorder that may pose, or has posed, a threat to the property, safety, or welfare of the alien or others

I dont see how I can answer this in any way other than yes, as I have posed a threat to myself, or my welfare, and it was only 6 months ago.

Are these rules in the slightest bit flexible, or are they absolute and id be wasting my time and money even trying to get a B visa?

You will likely be referred to the Panel Physician, who will have to certify that you are no longer a danger to yourself or others. If the doctor is unable/unwilling to certify that, the visa will have to be denied as a health risk. With it only having been 6 months, they may not be willing to sign off yet -- but you won't know unless you apply. The good news is that this is not a permanent ineligibility -- when the doctor is ready to certify you pose no danger to yourself, you will once again likely qualify for a visa.

The even better news is that you sought help and are overcoming your issues -- good for you! I hope you continue to improve and get a clean bill soon.

Thanks Jan.

Looking at all the docs ive found, it looks like I will have to wait 12 months since the last episode to show I am now no longer a current risk to myself or others. Otherwise Id be classed as a class 'A' risk, and visa declined whatever paperwork I can get from the docs etc.

If anyone has any suggestions as to if there is a way forward sooner Id appreciate it as we have a family gathering in October which Id like to get to, but if not Ill probably just wait until next year and take it from there.

Thanks
