A dispute between two New York City pedestrians over a dog has landed a man in a hospital suffering from critical injuries.

The altercation took place in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan at the corner of West 55th Street and Ninth Avenue at around 6.30pm Tuesday.

The attack was caught on video, which shows a man punching a stranger in the face and then taking off running from the scene after the victim collapses to the ground.

The unnamed victim was in the company of a friend who was walking a small white dog when the suspect stepped over the pet as he bypassed the pair on the sidewalk, according to the New York Police Department.

The dog owner became upset and confronted the pedestrian, demanding to know why he stepped over his pooch, the New York Post reported.

At that moment, the victim joined in the argument and had some words with the suspect, who then followed him down the street.

The video recorded by an eyewitness captured the moment when the suspect faced off against the dog walker's friend, took a swing and sucker-punched him in the face with a closed fist.

As the hulking, muscular man fell to the ground, banging his head on the pavement, the attacker fled.

The victim was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. According to investigators, the man sustained a serious head injury.

Police are now searching for the attacker, who is described as 5-foot-7, weighing 170lbs with curly blonde hair.

Well it is hard to say from the video...since it does not really show if the victim was actually the aggressor.....but it appears that he was trying to cause trouble.

If so.....it was just self-defense.

Lesson learned.....don't follow strangers around trying to provoke them.....as they may just become scared and knock you out.
