They would not. Likely a conservative mayor would have done a much worse job and many more would have perished.

I think even my 13 year old niece would have done a better job than that crook.

That ain't my point, and you know it. My point is that blacks never elect conservatives. What was it, for example... some 95% of blacks voted for Obama.

And do you actually think that conservatives would go out of their way not to help? That is silly.

Really? Are you sure about that?

Cochran beat state Sen. Chris McDaniel by targeting black Democrats and getting them to vote for him in a tight race.

Cochran demonstrates what many black conservatives already know: GOP candidates will only reach out to black voters, kicking and screaming, as a last resort to win.

Because maybe the population of New Orleans did not elect one ? just guessing

You know it's very important among the Nagin crowd, the first and foremost the City remain chocolate. All else is secondary

Let me understand. They vote for a crooked liberal, but you expect conservatives to step in and make sure things run correctly. Thats funny

All I hear is how bad liberals are, yet where are the conservatives? You said I should vote for the good of the country, not just for myself. Should they step in and help out, or continue to lay back and watch the body count rise?

1. Cochran is no conservative.

2. All politicians, regardless of their stripes, reach out only to those that will help them win.

So why doesn't the GOP reach out more to minorities? If that's where most of the conservatives reside, why not?

Then why don't conservatives do a better job, because you know, they're so eager to go and help out the black community.

If conservatives did a better job this guy would have been sentenced way back in 2005, after Katrina. I am sure that bringing him to justice is part of Obama's secret plan to destroy America...

Nagin should have been fired a long time ago and put in jail. But like I said, the GOP isn't rushing down there to help either.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jindal wasn't in it with him...

I haven't heard anything about him, but with politicians, it doesn't matter which side of the pond you're on, you can be crooked.

You are forgetting that when Bush tried to help, however ineptly, he was vilified by the media (and Hollywood) as racist. Countless news pictures of black faces on roofs of houses, newly homeless, etc. that the media falsely attributed to racism. The city is something like 65% black! Some of the most severely storm-affected areas were predominantly populated by minorities!

That was the reason most faces of those affected seemed black.

And the media played this alleged disparity up, and people still believe this false narrative today.

It helps no one to scream racism when that was not the heart of the matter.

He wasn't criticized for trying to help, it was for the lack of(or perceived lack of) help.

And that's no excuse for the GOP to not reach out to minority voters. What about before then? The GOP didn't care because when this country was overwhelming white(and for the most part still is) they only cared about that vote. And they still do, to this day. It's sad because they're ignoring a growing voter base that could help them in the long run.

But, let's be fair. It might not be racist, but based on the fact that they're poor might be the factor.

Yes, that could be part of it. But you have to admit that politicians always play to their respective bases. If politicians of either party thought poor people could bring them votes, they'd help them in a second.

But there are poor white people as well as black people. Every vote counts. The GOP goes to rural areas, which has poor white people in it, why can't the same be done for urban areas?

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but they go wherever they can get votes. I would do the same thing if I ran for office. And that does not necessarily mean they won't reach out to others if elected (although that is less likely than pleasing their base once in office).

I think that should be the focus of your displeasure about the situation - we should strive for candidates that help all once elected.

This is not a perfect world. What they do to get elected is secondary.

Term limits and less pay would be a good incentive to attract people that are truly interested in serving the public, rather than making a cushy career out of being in office.
