  1. 1. Should Taiwan be the 51st state?

    • No, because Taiwan is the real China. Taiwan needs our help taking back the mainland from the Communist occupiers.
    • No, because Puerto Rico is going to be the 51st state.

Around 70 people from the self-claimed "USA Taiwan government" entered the Taiwan provincial government hall in Nantou Monday to express opinions, causing police officers to maintain order at the site and ask them to leave.

Some people of the group got into the lobby on the first hall of the government building around the noon under the excuse of using the bathroom and then lifted the national flag of the United States and a flag printed with stars, stripes and the shape of Taiwan.

Also a cloth printed with the "USA Taiwan government" was hung on the front gate of the provincial government building.

Members of the group tried to barge into the office of minister without portfolio Lin Junq-tzer on the third floor, demanding a dialogue with Lin, but they were blocked by police officers.

Tang Nien-shun, the head of Chunghsing police precinct, which is in charge of Chunghsing New Village, the seat of the Taiwan provincial government, said that police had given warnings several times and planned to start evicting them later at night.

By 8:15 pm the protesters were dispersed by police.

The activists claimed their occupation of the government building to be "normal and necessary," saying that Taiwan's people should retrieve their own rights and safeguard Taiwan's survival by peaceful and rational means.

So I just googled this Letter to the Editor. It is... interesting.

Letter: Taiwan is US territory

By Roger Lin
Thu, Nov 10, 2005

After the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, the Japanese emperor agreed to an unconditional surrender on Aug. 15, 1945. On Sept. 2, General Douglas MacArthur issued General Order No. 1, which described procedures for surrender ceremonies and military occupation in more than 20 areas. After examining this order, we need to answer an important question: "Who is the occupying power?"

The only possible answer is the US. This is confirmed by Article 23 of the San Francisco treaty -- the US is described as "the principal occupying power."

With this in mind, the Taiwanese people can demand that the US commander-in-chief issue the order for the ROC to disband, because the ROC is now blocking the Taiwanese people from enjoying fundamental rights under the US Constitution. With the ROC out of the way, Taiwan can change its name and make preparations for a constitutional convention to draft a new constitution.

This would not be a unilateral change to the status quo, just a full clarification of it. Could the US president object to such a procedure? If so, he could be impeached. For the benefit of Taiwan's future, pro-Taiwan groups in the US should promote this strategy among members of the US Congress.

Editor's note: It is the position of this newspaper that Taiwanese, as constituents of a democratic state, may refuse to recognize any claim on their territory or ignore any treaty to which they are not a signatory -- including the much-cited San Francisco treaty, which, barring the fanciful prospect of a unilateral declaration of sovereignty over Taiwan by the US, has precious little bearing on the real-life dangers threatening this nation today.

ya, RoC wasn't a party to the surrender document signed in 'Frisco, so there is no grounds for this type of take-over.

Sorry.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

70 people is not that impressive. These guys are a lot like the Hong Kongers. They don't want to be under Chinese rule, don't want to become a US protectorate, and don't want to build a resistance. They want magic.
