ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say an airline passenger was arrested in Michigan after being found with a knife concealed inside the bottom lining of one of his shoes.

The Transportation Security Administration says the knife was found Sunday during security screening at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.

The TSA says airport police took possession of the knife and arrested the passenger. His name wasn't released.

Not too bright. If it's not flesh and blood, you're not going to get it through.

Is it so stupid that it seems like a very bad FBI plant, or is it so stupid, that it's all too real?

Probably the latter. But, nowadays you can't be too sure. They haven't released the name of the suspect so it might be an ongoing investigation.

With those 3D naked body scanners I heard that if you laid a knife flat that it would just be a thin line that could be easily overlooked since they scan in a circular pattern around the body vertically but not horizontally.. Though the picture in the article does not look like he was trying to make it as flat (2D) as possible..

It would have to be horizontally flat, so, through your belly? How about sticking straight out in the front? Maybe right under your junk?

The scanner goes in a circle around you.

So say if you put a coin on your head so it is lying flat.. The scanner whirls around you.. The cross section of the coin is extremely thin.. All that shows in the pic is a very thin line that may be missed. If the scanner also did a circle bottom to top it would scan the top/bottom of the coin and show it completely.

Right, but you don't scan the shoes. You still take off shoes and they go through the belt machine. So where is the horizontal knife going on your body?

A scanner picked up a hair tie at the bottom of a braid on top of a bra hook, on me.

I don't think it is necessarily true, something I heard while going through security one time.. If I was going to try it I would experiment with a small thin blade with no handle on the bottom of my foot with thick socks.

All right, that might be plausible.

Not much out there.. Did fine this article: http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/naked-scanners-flaws-exposed/story-e6frfq80-1225970422231

While scanner operators may be able to spot some of the items, many others such could go unnoticed.

“They (the scanners) are ineffective for thin objects such as blades when they are aligned close to the beam direction,” the report says

“An object such as a wire or a box-cutter blade, taped to the side of the body, or even a small gun in the same location, will be invisible.” The study comes from leading University of California physicists Leon Kaufman and Joseph W. Carlson - who spearheaded the development of today’s medical imaging technology.
