Hello Canadians,

We are planning on a trip to enter Canada from the US. I am a US Citizen with a passport. My wife is a green card holder with an expired non-US passport.

How will my wife enter the country? Does she need to have a valid passport? In some web sites, it says you don't need a passport if you are a US green card holder while some others says it. Just want help with this since it'll be my first visit as well as my wife into Canada.

I will give you bonus points for helping me out. Thank you!

If you are driving across a land border crossing, she just needs her green card. She should carry her expired passport - it is a good idea for her to have a valid passport for her own country, regardless, but it isn't required in this circumstance - along with other proof of her identity. Canada will view her the same as a US citizen and allow her entry on the green card- proof that the US will allow her to re-enter the US after the visit and she won't be stranded in Canada. The US is only interested in her green card proving she is legally entitled to enter and l live in the US, and proof that she is the same person to whom the card was issued, thus using the expired passport.

If you intend to fly into Canada she will require a valid passport, as per regulations of the airlines. It is usually cheaper to fly to a US border city, rent a car and then drive across the border. That is what we do when we visit.

So, where are you going? There are lots of people here who can give you some really good suggestions of places to go and things to see and do.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
