I have read the embassy prohibited list, and have also read contradicting posts on this forum, can anyone confirm whether phones are allowed? bags etc?

They started allowing them in February. See this post with text of email from London as additional confirmation.

As to bags, don't try to take in something the size of luggage. Large handbags and small backpacks or tote bags seem to get through okay. Don't bring your duffle or overnight bag. :P
