Hi everyone,

Sorry, i know i have seen similar topics to this but none of them quite answered the question i have.

In 2012 i purchased a new GM vehicle (and i love her). I am financing through GM (and subsequently through TD). I still have several years of payments left- so long as i continue to pay monthly, can i import my vehicle? Has anyone gone through this, or know someone who has, or know where I can get this information?

(I know that i will also need the compliance letter from GM)

Thank you!

If you still owe money you may have more trouble importing the vehicle... You'll have to ask your bank as well as doing whatever you have to do so far as straight importing.

The option is to sell the car and buy a new one in the USA where cost is generally less. Hubs and I have done pretty well with just one vehicle since I've moved. Costs more in gas obviously.

Hi Sparkles. If you are financing your car through TD Auto Finance, then you are in the same boat as me and their response to me when I asked them if I could take my car with them when I move was "no". The loan documents you would have signed should state something to this effect, in that the vehicle is to remain in Canada until the loan is paid off.

But ask and see. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to take yours.

Same goes for Honda Finance. I called as well...emphatic NO. I was lucky and only had a few months left...

Another thing to keep in mind....often when u take a vehicle out of the country....that vehicle no longer is covered by the warranty..recalls yes....but often not the warranty, even if it is brand spanking new.......even if a car salesman says it is.....I know with our brand new 2011 CRV when we took it to Nicaragua, it had no warranty.....I called up Honda and they confirmed that....

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
