If you fiance is a student and is not employed, thus having no income you will need a co-sponsor. Co-sponsors with the K-1 visa can be difficult at USEM to say the least, it may be better to go the IR/CR-1 route as the embassy has to accept a co-sponsor then.

Do we still need a co sponsor though he has money in the bank?

The embassy wants to see income, if the money is such that he collects interest income adequate to meet the guidelines then no issue. But money in the bank as assets, not so much. I have a friend that went through this, he had money in the bank but the embassy wouldn't look at it, they required him to get a co-sponsor.
