Name change affecting travel documents.

I ran into this problem when I changed my last name after getting married. (Not hyphenated ) . I understand for heterosexual couples, the wife/ husband could just go to his/ her consulate or embassy and have the passport endorsed with the new name.

However , in my case, it is a same sex marriage and I contacted my country's immigration department (Hong Kong ) , I was told they do not accept foreign marriage certificate as a legal name change . I then contacted UK consulate in New York ( british national due to birth in HK before handover ) , and was told they can't change my name unless my HK Identification card shows name change .

So, if I travel with the combo card or future green card, could airlines deny boarding because I don't have matching travel documents ?

Anybody has same issues ?

From my knowledge, it is advised for same-sex bi-national couples to keep their names and not take the other partner's name. From what I read In some of the threads, some states do not recognize gay marriage so you may not even be able to get a license under the name change. I believe this ll get more complicated internationally since most countries do not recognize gay mariage

Did you consult with a lawyer? You may need to keep your original name to avoid this type of issues.

Good luck
