If you're an immigrant, the govt must have sent you a "Welcome To America" letter, which stipulates your rights and obligations as a resident. If you have been abused by your wife, document the abuse and the govt will not treat you differently because of your gender. Most people are not fully informed that's why we are all here to share our experiences and receive vital help here. I am wondering if you are trying to be of help indeed, or to make a selective judgt against the female folks generally. I mean think about the audience you're trying to draw into unfounded debate. Is it worth the while?

Aren't you the one who wanted to use VAWA to stay in the US, because your kids are too sick to live in cold Canada, but live just fine in cold New York? That you were scraping together whatever meager evidence of abuse possible?

If anything this thread belongs to the "discussion of VAWA abuse" thread.

Not true, you will most certainly be treated different and it will be much harder to convince a magistrate or judge that you're in fear of a female.

Wow, are all of these women who are posting against the original poster? I think the article has merit here but I would also like to see a study if these women are "western" women or women who have come from another country.

I think this is interesting post that found its way in a wrong forum. I would rather take time to analyze the post for a second if I had found it in a different forum, say, off topic, for example. What do you stand to benefit in this when you are gathering paperwork to file AOS, ROC, or Citizenship? Many people are here because the need help or want to help. Let's not forget this fact.

Despite the OP's protestation, neither the topic nor the cited article has anything to do with "effects of major family changes on immigration benefits." Therefore, and because the topic involves a recent article about a recent psychological conference, the thread is being moved from the Effects of Major Changes forum to the Current Events & Hot Social Topics forum. The VJ Terms of Service apply to all responses.

@ Ranshiel, are you sure if you have the evidence of domestic violence that the judge will not consider it base on gender? You know that's discrimination! Why would anyone claim a fake vawa? Women are consider weaker sex and may have some sort of protection in terms of general perspective. I am not against gender equality; but how can a man convience a fellow man that he is afraid of a woman without concrete evidence to prove his fear? Men are believed to be stronger than women physically notwitstanding.

Women are more likely to be physically aggressive towards their partners than men

Women are more likely to be verbally and physically aggressive towards their partners than men suggests a new study presented as part of a symposium on intimate partner violence (IPV).

The symposium 'Developments in Intimate Partner Violence Research and Practice' is presented today, Wednesday 25 June, at the British Psychological Society's Division of Forensic Psychology annual conference in Glasgow.

Dr Elizabeth Bates from the University of Cumbria and colleagues from the University of Central Lancashire gave a total of 1104 students (706 women and 398 men) questionnaires about their physical aggression and controlling behaviour, to partners and to same-sex others (including friends).

Analysis showed that women were more likely to be physically aggressive to their partners than men and that men were more likely to be physically aggressive to their same-sex others.

Furthermore, women engaged in significantly higher levels of controlling behaviour than men, which significantly predicted physical aggression in both sexes.

Dr Elizabeth Bates explained: "This was an interesting finding. Previous studies have sought to explain male violence towards women as rising from patriarchal values, which motivate men to seek to control women's behaviour, using violence if necessary.

"This study found that women demonstrated a desire to control their partners and were more likely to use physical aggression than men. This suggests that IPV may not be motivated by patriarchal values and needs to be studied within the context of other forms of aggression, which has potential implications for interventions."

Other papers presented in the symposium are as follows:

'Inner Strength Domestic Violence Programme' - Dr Nichola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire & Mid Sweden University)

'Men's experiences of victimisation from a female intimate partner: An international study' - Louise Dixon (University of Birmingham).

'Reasons for engaging in conflict within and outside of relationships: A comparison of women's responses' - Abi Thornton, (University of Bolton), Nichola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire) & J. Archer.

'Literature review: Men's Experience of Domestic Abuse' - Brian Dempsey (University of Dundee).
