OP has a much longer thread going on the same subject, perhaps a mod will merge.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

One final thing to think about -- trying to do something that is against the purpose of a visitor's visa may well result in an ineligibility that will affect the pending F1 immigrant visa. I'm sure you don't want to do that.

You referred to you and your wife several times as "elderly"....not sure how you define that, so can't guess how old you are. As I said in an earlier post, some of your home support needs might be covered by Medicare, if you are old enough to receive it. You might also talk to the social workers at the hospital where the surgeries will be performed to help you identify community resources. Bottom line, exploring these kinds of things are likely to be more productive than continuing to disbelieve what very knowledgeable people here who are saying. They are trying to help you avoid causing your stepson problems entering the US when it's for a legitimate visit or (ultimately, for immigration).

Also, even if he applies for F-1, he's going to have a VERY hard time proving no immigrant intent and will probably get denied.

Just another thing to think about...

whereas you have? It means that no CO would believe that the SIL managed to hang out in the US for several months without working, because there is NO job in Moldova that (a) pays so handsomely that an employee could afford to take off six months in a foreign country and (b) nor allows its employees to be away from their job for such a period of time...which really means the SIL has NO job...which then strongly suggests he would be (or did) work without permission while in B2 status....so yes, my earlier, lengthy post is spot on...and relevant...

Very judgmental post that adds nothing to the discussion.

Playing devil's advocate, sabbaticals in academia are quite often of one year in duration (although unpaid).

(I see this argument being brought out repeatedly on VJ and to tell the truth it gets on my nerves)

More likely he is hanging out pending his immigrant visa.
