Harassed at the USCIS office

Today my husband had his biometrics appointment at our USCIS office. On the way into the office some a$$HOLE stared us down and made a comment about USCIS sending all the foreigners back to their country. I told him to go to hell and we continued on to the office. As we were leaving, the same guy was standing in the doorway of the building, waiting for us, wanting to start something. I asked him what his problem was and he said my husband was "looking at him." We stood up to him and he left, but then after we left the building he followed us to our car. I decided to call the police and what a joke that was! Now my husband is pissed off and tells me he deals with it all the time and wants to just move back to his country. He's mad at me because I called the police and he says they're useless and he would rather just punch the people in their face. I try to explain that it will just make more problems for us but he sticks to his opinion. Now he's not talking to me and I am just tired of dealing with all of this immigration stuff and the problems. I need a break. I know how ignorant some Americans can be, but I can't believe someone would actually come into a government building to harass us.

How gross that happened to you! You should definitely have called the police. Explain to him that the police here are generally good and responsive. My husband was surprised the police actually came when we called them.

Don't let one crazy ####### ruin your life here. Sorry that happened to you.

Nut jobs all over. I get approached by idiots from time time. Ask for money then get mad if you don't. They usually don't push the issue, cause I am scary looking dude. Tell your husband to count all the people that are nice to him and he will see what a very small percentage of people here are jerks

I vote for letting hubby kick some butt. It will make him feel better. Have you applied to get him a gun permit yet ?

Strange.... when My wife went to her appointment you did not get to enter the building without a reason and a show of ID, (A current one at that)... Pockets were emptied and everything was x ray like at the airport. Armed guard standing right there.

Thanks for the support everyone! The building has one set of doors you can enter before you get to the guards with big glass windows. They saw him in the doorway through the windows and did nothing. We did talk to them and they said that they only had jurisdiction to the door since they were a private security company hired by DHS. I sort of regret just staying there and calling the cops because that also did nothing. Sad, but true. Guess it's just how things are nowadays. Also, TBoneTX you are so right and I explained that to him, but he doesn't really care. I tried to explain that if he did something, the guy could probably sue us and then he gets money from us for what he did. He doesn't think that way though and doesn't care to understand.

If you respond to their ignorance with violence you are helping to support their position. Talking with them will do no good as bigotry has no basis in logic. Ignoring them is the best solution.

Hi,

Sorry about the harassment.

Tell your husband that he is in the US, and you know the rules. He doesn't.

He can not handle things the Ecuador way. He has to learn to do it the US way.

He needs to understand that he can not assault someone even if that person is harassing him when he has the opportunity to let the police handle it peacefully.

Find a bilingual abogado (lawyer, in Spanish) to acculturate him about the criminal and civil implications, during a free half-hour consultation. By phone might work; in person would be far better.

To piggyback on Aaron's observation, the core issue is that machista tendencies don't fly in the Estados Unidos, and even if he's not a macho himself, those reactions can be deeply engrained, whether he was raised that way or was surrounded by it. He's new here, so he needs to be coaxed or browbeaten into a clear understanding of the societal differences. You might be too close to him, and you're "merely" a woman (!), so a third party (male abogado) might prove to be an ideal counselor.
