So you provided them with proof that you are travelling in 14 days?

I didn't provide any proof. I didn't provide any traveling information; I left that page blank. Just the 'ordinary' expedite service at the post office ($60).

This is only necessary if you're applying for expedited service through a passport agency. If you do the expedited service through the mail or at a regular acceptance facility, you do not need proof of travel, but they recommend the passport agency route if you need the passport within 2-3 weeks.

https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/services/expedited.html

It also has the advantage that if you're traveling in less than 8 business days, they'll hand you back the Certificate of Naturalization when you pick up your new passport in person as opposed to through the mail.

This is the reason why they mail back the passport and CON separately, a few days apart, so that the likelihood that both gets lost in the mail is very small (even losing one in the mail is a small likelihood to begin with).

I plan on applying for both the regular passport and the passport card (even though I have no plans to travel to Canada or Mexico by land), as the passport card is a much more compact proof of citizenship than either the regular passport or the CON.
