I'm trying to get my name changed and need certified copies of my marriage certificate. What the heck is that? And how do I get one?

Go to the city office where your marriage was registered they can give you certified copies for a fee...

Usually you get it sent to you after the wedding but if you go to your town/city hall they'd have a copy of it.

I had to have certified copies of my divorce papers.

Had to have a copy of them no older than 5 years to send to the state to get authenticated (which I did in person) and then I had to send that off to Washington DC to have it authenticated there.

Not sure if there's a difference with marriage papers but you could probably check online for the state you live in. Just look for state department and you'll find lots of info.

yep, we did too.... but you can also go to your Clerk of Court office and request copies... probably for a fee as someone said.

The Clerk of Courts is where you would want to go to get certified copies. There is usually a nominal fee.

also, i'm not sure of the cost difference but you might also consider making notarized copies of the original... just a thought.

Get a bunch of extra copies... you need them for all kinds of random stuff. I got 4 copies, and I've used 2 of them already! Usually you can just send a photocopy, but for some things they require that you give them an actual copy.

It took us more than three months to get a copy of our marriage certificate. The city we got the license in kept sending it to us in our married name. Problem is...we had just gotten a new postal carrier who was going by the letter of the code...she kept returning the item saying there was no one here by that name. I had to go speak to her supervisor 3 times before we got it resolved. Needless to say, my grandparents went and overnighted a copy to me in the end because we needed the original. (And wouldn't you know the next day the first one showed up.)

Moral of the story: Make sure your new last name is well known to the carrier.
