is there anything prohibiting me from accepting the offer a job which I would then start as soon as the work permit arrived?

Not at all! In fact, if you fax USCIS a copy of a job offer with a start date, they might expedite your EAD for you to be able to start.

But accepting an offer (and not working before the EAD comes) is perfectly legal.

Reading through this thread this is pretty much the advice I'd planned to post myself. Nothing is guaranteed 100%, but I have seen many people with written job offers get their EAD expedited rather quickly. They won't take your word for it, so be sure to get a copy of the offer with a start date to send to them, and odds are good you'll get your EAD expedite request approved much faster than the normal route. I have seen people just try to say that they have an open job offer and that hasn't worked as well as one with an actual start date.

Do keep in mind what others have said, you will have to pay over $1,000.00 in fees to cover your AOS, so push yourself now to have that money ready to go when you get here. You may have a rather tight budget for a bit when you first arrive, but a good marriage lasts a lifetime and this short time of struggle will seem a distant memory soon enough

Another suggestion is prepare your AOS package (with job letter to expedite EAD) as soon as possible, this takes time!

Not only gathering the bona fide evidence, but also the paperwork, filling the forms, proof, proof and proof for typos, having your vaccines current, having the sponsor's taxes reports, etc... --> then when you get married you just add that last documentation and send the next day after you got married.

I got married in april, and it took me almost 3 months to prepare the package by myself, it can be overwhelming. Some friends did it with a lawyer. paid $5000 and got it ready in a month. After you have done it once, you realize its not that hard, I helped another friend and we got it ready in less than a month.

I prepared AOS/EAD/AP before my fiancé got the visa. There were a few details to wait on like flight number and date of entry, but most of it was already filled out and printed by the time he arrived. Added I-94, photocopy of visa page, his vaccination sheet from the visa medical, marriage certificate and it was in the mail four days after the wedding and 9 days after POE. Did not submit any bonafide evidence of the marriage other than the required marriage certificate. If you plan ahead and marry quickly you can have your EAD sooner than if you wait around until after the wedding to figure out what is required. My husband had his EAD less than three months from POE.

The reason why I told my fiance that we will marry in a private ceremony within seven days of her arrival and have the real wedding later is so that I can immediately file for her to adjust status. It is my impression that the application to adjust status can also include a temporary work permit request. Your beneficiary is not a resident of the state for tuition purposes until she is a resident of the country. The university might not check very carefully on an enrollment, but because they are probably going to have to pay her through a payroll system with w-2's and social security withholding, it won't get through. The old "Do you have the legal right to work in the United States?" question is going to hit your beneficiary right between the eyes.

I would have thought most people take a day or so, 3 months?

Oh, don't worry, we're well aware of how much the AOS package will cost us! We've been preparing for that for a little while now. Hence why the original question of a potential way of earning some money sooner rather than later came up. If that's not possible, though, the hope would be to have a job lined up for the moment the EAD comes through.

And yes, having the AOS package ready to send off the day after the marriage is definitely also the plan!

Takes a bit longer than that; you'll need a certified copy of your marriage certificate for the package. Depending on your state and how long it takes your officiant to mail in the signed paperwork, that could be an extra couple of weeks.

If your question is about if it took me 3 months to prepare the package.

I said I did it by myself, no prior knowledge or prep work to organize the tasks in a better orther. It probably took about 2 1/2 months. One day?! I really doubt it. I would guess a month if you have guidance. for me it was:

month 1: ---- research the papers to fill, watch some tutorial videos, find visajourney. Figuring out if I needed a lawyer, All the people I knew that had done this said it was tricky and complicated and they hired one. Gather pictures, ask friends and family for pictures. Wait for marriage certificate in the mail.

month 2: ---- have my parents find my vaccinations papers from 30 years ago, and wait for the vaccine appointment to get new ones, get my documents translated, etc... Get the papers ready. Then realize that getting the tax transcripts takes 2 weeks.

And oh, no!! the EAD-expedite needs a job offer. so, ask the University for an informal letter about my teaching job for the fall then wait..

month 3: --- get the taxes on the mail. get the letter from the university. send

it can be done. We plan to send ours out by the next day. I'm prepping the paperwork now. He arrives July 25th, we will finalize the documents needed (apart from the marriage cert.) over the weekend, then we get married July 28th in Santa Barbara, Ca. They've already agreed that we can have our certified copy that day (and have made a note of it in their system). All that should be left to do is mail it. (this is in a perfect world  )

Everything except the marriage certificate can be prepared ahead of time.

If all the documents are prepared before the fiancee arrives, it should be relatively easy to get married immediately upon entry, wait for the marriage certificate, and them send everything off.

Planning early always helps make things smoother.
