Hey there,

You can apply anytime now SSN after your arrival in the US until 2 weeks before your I-94 is expired. It is not true that you have to wait your work permit or AoS form since K-1 visa holder is allow to apply SSN.

Please come back to their office, bring your passport and I-94 (you can get by online now) and print this https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

I have seen suggestions to leave it a couple of weeks after entering the US to file in order to allow their systems to update with your presence in the US.

I surprised her with a proposal in Los Angeles, and this is how it went down!

You should be able to get your SS about 2 weeks after entering the US. Possibly sooner, but your record may not be updated across the board yet.

The staff at our local SS office was ready to deny my fiance based on the same reasons, wanted him to have work auth already. But I gave them the entire printout off their own site (same link as above https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530) with the K-1 line highlighted, which prompted them to research it further. They checked with another official online and then somewhat hesitantly followed through. 7 days later we received his card in the mail.

We've found lots of officials out here near Chicago have no flipping clue about K-1 procedures. It sucks, but I guess sometimes you have to very politely educate officials who are unfamiliar with it along the way =(

for a k-1 visa holder -

after POE Date - and prior to day 76 past POE date,

show up at SSA with your printed I-94 (gotten online), your passport, and apply in person with a new SSA-5 form.

That's it.

Apply in passport name.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

You were given incorrect information on your first SSA visit. As advised above, you can apply now with just your I-94, Passport + visa and a filled-out SS-5. Just make sure you have at least 15 days left on your I-94, as what Darnell mentioned as well.

Just a quick question, did you apply in your married name? If so, that's probably why they don't see your name in the SAVE database. Go back to SSA using your maiden name, as what is reflected on your passport, visa and I-94.

Where do you get a printed I-94? I thought it was on the passport with a stamp on it.

Hi llindsay! The I-94 is now retrieved electronically here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

No more paper I-94s for both air and sea travels.

I'm a little thrown off by all of this (sorry) I was about to make a new thread but rearranged my "search words" .
I am waiting for a K-1 Visa.
once i get the K1 i cross the border, marry my fiance with 90 days and then apply for an AoS. (is that an i94? or is the i94 already issued)
I was told that if i wanted to change my name to my fiance's I'd have to do it WHILE applying for the AoS.

However, when should I apply for the SSN? and If my name is changed shouldn't I apply with my married name or keep the name on my Canadian passport?

sorry for the bombardment but you all seem super helpful. Thanks in advance :)
