My wife has finally arrived. Is there any advantage to going to our local SS building and applying (ie: will we get it on the spot). We did indicate on the immigration forms that she wished to receive one, and it says that it takes about 3 weeks.

Here is a question for you: Do you want to send the original documents required by the SSA thru the USPS or other delivery means and have some stranger be responsible to return them to you? Most likely they will use ordinary USPS without tracking to send them back to you. THAT is the reason everybody goes to the local office even if the employees training varies all over the place. I would wait a few weeks to see if the card actually arrives. IF you need the number sooner, go and explain your wife entered on a CR-1/IR-1 visa and you ticked the box and see if they can get you the number. IF not, apply then and there and go back in a day or two to get the number printed out.

Good luck,

Dave
