Student Visa Qualifications

The same issue of proving ties that will require the applicant to return to their country apply to student visas as well as visitor visas. Since he's already been denied for a visitor visa, plus has a US citizen fiancée, I would say save the $$ and don't apply for the student visa.

BTW, one of the other requirements for a student visa is to demonstrate the ability to pay for the proposed course of study. If someone wants to come to the US to study, they need to show they can pay for it -- even if later on they get a scholarship or something (no federal grants or federal guaranteed loans, though). What that means in practical terms is that the visa officer has to see liquid assets to pay for the entire first year of studies and an income stream that will provide for future years. You're right -- it's not cheap -- but under our visa laws, the US has a responsibility to educate its own populace, not the rest of the world.

I mean who actually has money to pay for a whole years worth of school? I'm American and I don't. It's just crazy how they have all this set up. They don't realize that some of the most intelligent people happen to not be Natural born American citizens.

If he is bright enough he will get scholarship. For example, originally I came to US on student visa by getting full scholarship from UCLA. This means bright. Anything short of this has to pay.

I came in on an F-1 Visa, i was denied at first because I couldnt show that I was going to be able to pay $40,000 a year to go to Embry Riddle. i decided to change schools and applied to a public school instead which was $20,000 a year. I had to show i could afford the first year, meaning 20k plus in my parents account... and not just a 20k deposit but 6 months of deposits showing there was a flow of cash.

After the first year, Survival began.... and I did survive, working 20 hours a week and 40 during breaks.. sometimes even more.

Point of the story, you need to fund your own education... get a scholarship like the smart Russian or fund yours like every other indian, African, chinese etc...

My advice, go via the K1 route, save up money, visit your fiancee and go from there.. my 2 cents ;)

Ok I will look into that and see how that process goes. Is there a age requirement for applying?

Read and study the guides at the top of the page, all of your questions can be answered there. There is a lot to any visa process, it isn't for the faint of heart, it is long and involved and very costly. There is no way for him to get here cheaply, or to have the US pay for his education in order to get him here just so you can meet. Just stop and think about what you are suggesting. I have a 19 year old son who was born, raised and educated in this country and the government doesn't pay for his college education, I do. What makes you think they are going to pay for some random foreigner's education if they don't even do it for US citizens? Before you even begin to worry about what type of visa, you need to meet in person. That is first and foremost. Stop trying to figure out another way for him to get here other than a visitor visa, it just isn't possible. Go to meet him, you don't even know if you will get along in real life...then go from there

AmyWrites, yes that is his purpose mainly but he would also like to enroll in school as well. He has a degree in accounting, but I'm not sure how easy it would be for him to get a job in that field. He is wanting to do medical.

If being with you is his main purpose, I don't see him getting past the F1 interview without having to lie to the CO. Which is a big no-no!

Edit: unless the CO does not ask a lot of questions, which probably will not be the case since he has already been denied a visitor's visa.

A foreign student does not have to pay out of pocket. They can get private student loans as long as there is a U.S. cosigner.

if you read the entire thread you would know that isn't an option. the OP wanted to know how she could get him a free education, they are not in any financial position to pay for anything, they can't even afford to meet according to the OP
