Hey all,

I've been reading a bunch of posts related to travelling while having an expired GC and the letter of extension. It seems like having both of those make it so that nobody has a problem. That's exciting! However my situation changed as of a few weeks ago. I got my expired GC stolen, and I'm still pending for approval for my new one (I'm in the Request for more evidence step). So now I only have a current passport and the extension letter. I could probably get the stamp in my passport I'm guessing if I go to INFOPASS and present the copy of my expired GC and the letter that my lawyer wrote for me, but yeah, I'm concerned that I just don't have the physical copy of my expired GC to accompany the extension letter. I do have the police report and all that notifying that I did indeed get the GC stolen... but not sure if this will be a problem.

I've been trying to get to see my family in Venezuela for 4 years and I really don't want this to not work... Any help would be useful. Thanks!

You cannot travel with only an extension letter. Do not even entertain that thought. Go get a I-551 stamp in your passport to travel.

The stamp is just like a temporary Greencard and works the same way. Not sure why you need a letter from your lawyer, you just have to prove you are a LPR and have need for the stamp to get it. Good luck.

And with that it will work well? With the stamp? And I can get the stamp easily if I have a letter from my lawyer and the police report and the extension letter, right?

You don't need a lawyer letter, it is an simple situation. Just schedule an InfoPass with your local service center and bring in police report and extension letter for an I-551 stamp.
