I brought pretty much everything except my pots and pans, some dishes, a spare bed, a stereo and entertainment unti, and some bedding with me. I hired a moving company to bring it down, it cost me about $2000. They broke my TV. :P

Why did I bring it? Because I couldn't part with my several boxes of stuffed bears, several boxes of books, DVDs, CDs, and clothes and stupid stuff like that.

I left the pots and pans and other stuff because my parents had split up about that time, and somehow my Dad got everything in the divorce and my Mum needed it. Otherwise I probably would have brought all that too ;)

It cost us about $3200 USD to have my stuff brought down by moving company from Nova Scotia to Oklahoma. They were excellent, professional, friendly, efficient....and best of all, they didn't break or scratch a thing. Worth every penny. :)

I might bring most of that if I can afford to.

How far did you move?

What moving companies did you guys use? Do they charge by weight, by volume, or both?

Thanks.

A few people have mentioned a company called u-pack, http://www.upack.com/ From what I understand they drop a pod or truck off and move it. People in this group seemed to like it.

Sold or donated most of the big furniture and dishes; brought a few small occasional tables or pieces that had significance or use (ie drafting table, etc.) then went through and culled my books - still had lots of boxes of books though; did the same for bedding, towels, linens, blankets, clothing, etc. Donated virtually all of my winter clothing to Goodwill (had a really nice charitable tax [/b]deduction for that year!). Had several garage sales; Threw out lots of old financial and business files and documents (everything more than 5 years old - took a gamble as it is supposed to be 7 years) but still had lots. Put the rest into plastic storage tubs (ie. craft materials, art supplies,re-enactment clothing - most of what would be difficult or more expensive to replace). Joe already had a house with minimal items - he had most of the furniture, everyday dishes, and about an equal number of books but I had everything else so we combined resources. We used professional movers - took 1/3rd of a moving van. The books were the biggest weight and cost but it was well worth the expense having my things here - felt more like home.

For cloths donations or other items, goto a Goodwill or slavation Army drop off and they will give you a receipt that one can use for tax dedction purposes. The Goodwill here in Arlington Va lets you write up your own receipys!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I used Premiere Van Lines ( or Atlas Van Lines, I'll have to go doublecheck to make sure), and they charged by weight. They were completely familiar with what paperwork was necessary, so it was a breeze.

Thanks. I'd read that Atlas was good at handling cross-border moves. It's good to read a first-hand experience.

I made the donations to the Salvation Army and they provided receipts good for income tax purposes, charitable donations. Yeah, I noticed here in the States when you donate goods like clothing they give you a blank receipt and you fill in your own! We e-filed and IRS actually have values that they accept for goods in kind - we undervalued them in our appraisal so used the listed values instead and got an even higher deduction.

I moved my things down via United Van Lines. Everything arrived on time, in excellent condition and nothing broken. The price was about 10% higher than quoted but I believe it is because their agent undestimated the weight of the books involved - the agent who came to appraise the shipment was very new and it showed. The company itself was very good. They priced by weight and distance travelled. The van that carried my belongings carried belongings for two others relocating to Georgia - another Canadian and a returning American. Ours was the middle stop of the three, which I thought was pretty cool that they had 3 people relocating from the same general part of Canada to the same general part of the US all at the same time:-).

In the Moving Quote box for upack.com, click on the State drop-down box, and you'll see the Canadian provinces below the US states. Confusing, but it's there. :)

Elsewhere at the site, I remember seeing information about moving from Canada to the US.
