I have a friend who got a student visa for the U.S, the visa is valid starting from the 27th of July, since she is from a VWP country, can she enter the U.S 2 weeks earlier with the "tourist visa"?

02-25-2014 - Expedite approved

03-06-2014 - NOA2

NVC
03-18-2014 - NVC received in the building

04-18-2014 - NVC case number assigned
04-23-2014 - DS-261 completed online

04-25-2014 - I-864(AOS) Bill Generated and paid

04-30-2014 - IV Fee Generated and paid

05-01-2014 - Sent I-864(AOS) Package

05-01-2014 - IV packet sent

05-02-2014 - DS-260 completed online

05-16-2014 - NVC received IV packet and AOS packet
06-14-2014 - AOS Fee changed to N/A

Should she? No

If her intent is to be a student here on a J1 visa, she needs to enter with that visa. Changing status in the US can take a long time.

12/13/18: File online application

12/15/18: Receive notification for biometrics appointment (no date)

12/31/18: Biometrics

02/25/19: Receive interview letter (April 8 )

04/08/19: Interview, approved!

04/12/19: Oath scheduled for April 26 

04/26/19: Oath Ceremony! 🇺🇸

We just found out on the Department of State website that J1 Visa Holder can enter the U.S up to 30 days before starting their program. So, thank you but we found the answer we were looking for.

You can usually travel a week or two before your date in your DS with your J1 or F visa. I know it says 30 days before but that doesnt mean you should do it. Just be prepare at the port of entry if they ask why you are earlier. I have been a week earlier in one of my programs and they didnt ask me anyhting but i have friends that have traveled one and two weeks in advance and they ask them why, when they are gonna stay until their program start, if they have enough money, if the sponsor knows they are coming earlier... but nothing to worry about
