LOL! My fiancé doesn't even speak Hindi, but he does know some to get by, and I picked up on a few things while I was in India. :) I would like to learn more though.

I am answering on behalf of my husband who is the USC. He knows some important words but other than that it's just so convenient to talk in English all the time. Even now that we are stationed in Germany, he is always around his Army buddies and when we are out in the civilian world I do all the talking. But I am sure once we have kids and they will grow up bilingually, he will catch up on some more German.

Then again, you laugh whenever I speak Dutch (after you pushed me to do so). But yes, when you speak it, it sounds like there's something stuck in your throat. :D

I studied spanish for 8 months at an intense immersion school in Costa Rica, then I lived in El Salvador for a year which is where we met & visited him in Nicaragua for a month. I would say I know more than enough to get by but I am far from fluent. I would be closer to fluent if I had more confidence in my ability, I understand 95%. I can change my acccent from Costa Rican to Salvadoran and I almost have down the Nicaraguan accent. Spanish varies in each country but especially Nica, they speak so fast. He speaks very little English but is trying to learn and gets better each week, but we understand each other wonderfully! :luv: love makes it work

The foreign fiance is fluent in French and English.

The American (c'est moi) speaks English, rusty Italian, and is... attempting... ze French... pitifully. I can say the important stuff. I love you, I can't speak French (yes I can say that in French), I love you... and... erm... that's about it!:blush: Oh, wait, bonjour! Umm. Como talle vous? Uhh... yeah... oui oui mon ami... heh.:lol:

Hey Eli, So I understand what you mean when you say Nica spanish is faster. I was living there for a year in 2005 and was proud at the end of it all when I understood pretty much everything. It definitely prepared me for a much faster and in it's own way unique spanish in Cuba. Guess I knew I had learned a ton when I understood almost everything in Cuba. I will say though my Spanish accent is an odd mixture of Nica, Cuba, and Tica Spanish... along with my own little natural accent thrown in. While I know a ton... I wonder will I ever really be fluent since it is not my first language. And yes... love makes it work. At least there is much more patience in communication and there is no shame in asking him to explain a Cubanism being as you said all Spanish speaking countries varies in accent and words. Thanks for sharing.
