I moved to USA and feel like comfortable living here. I looked for the job and got almost the same thing that I used to do. Now in the process of doing background check.

What do they normally check for that? Since I just moved to USA (around 8 months ago), studied and worked in different places before I moved here as well. They asked the copy of my passport, the copy of IDs or any other documents that I used in differnet places, contact person in my old jobs. Will they contact them for this or ??? I have no problems in wherever I lived but I am just curious about this.

If they asked for your IDs (i.e. GC, SS card, passport), they're just probably checking it with E-verify to make sure you are a legal immigrant and authorized to work in US.

If they eventually do contact those people from your old job, then it must be because you're too good to be true as in your resume? :D I guess, it just mostly depends on the type of your profession. I read thread before where the employer also asked for a contact from the old company because the new job deals with federal software/ database. :)

My wife's gone through a couple of these. They never contacted former employers in the country she was from. The first took her fingerprints and picture. The second got more intensive, the gave drug tests and contacted the law enforcement agency in her country to get her records, which were clean btw. Both also looked into her credit history. So what they're going to check for depends on what the employer asks for and who they contract to do these background checks. In both cases it was a third party company doing the background check.

Thank you for all your info. I can provide all the infos for what they want. But they dont ask my finger print and picture till now. I am not highly educated or very good to be true. But I am going to work at the place with certain level of security in their info. Hopefully, they asked me coz of this. Please let me know if you all think I need to aware of some others in this process according to your experiences.

Thanks again.

Its pretty painless except the wait. The easy one was a week, the tougher one was 6 weeks. That one drove my wife crazy

Thank you so much. I filled up their form on June 11 and they only contacted me on June 17 night together with the info about where to go for drug test. Then, they contacted me yesterday for the contact person in my old jobs.

When I got my first job, they called every singe reference I had in Sweden and checked all my previous jobs by calling them in Sweden. They also wanted me to provide a transcript of my criminal background (or rather prove that I did not have one by getting a document from the police). That was a highly skilled job though and in a position where I would have access to sensitive data...

Thanks again, everyone. I provided the contact persons in my old jobs. I do not know how far they will check but I did not have any criminal or even over speed ticket. Till now, my background check is in process. In case, if they dont want me to work in that company due to whatever reason is, will it be any impact on my green card? I am on IR 1 with 2 year valid green card. I need to remove the conditions mid of 2015. Or am I crazy to think unrelated things?

My husband's employer did a background check, drug testing and asked for a copy of his college degree. I'm sure they asked for a copy of his college degree because verifying it from the US was probably impossible. He didn't have any issues and was hired.

Not getting a job has absolutely no impact on your green card.
