Well, perhaps NOT VERY MANY...

President Obama ordered Thursday up to 300 Special Forces troops to Iraq to advise the struggling Iraqi military and possibly help guide U.S. airstrikes against the extremists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Obama said the combat-equipped troops would serve in a strictly advisory role and their presence would not violate his earlier pledge against putting U.S. "boots on the ground" in Iraq.

"American combat troops are not going to be fighting in Iraq again," Obama said at a White House press room briefing.

I wonder if the ISIS folks got the message about not fighting so they won't shoot at US soldiers? ?

American Middle Eastern policy is still pants. It's been pants for years and nothing has changed. Partly it is due to the excessively partisan rhetoric from the two US political parties. There are things that are in the interests of the US that should be universally supported and this in party bickering is pathetic, on both sides. I wince whenever I hear one side or the other trying to score political points rather than trying to come to a sensible and pragmatic decision when faced with external threats.

What external threat? All these colonial creations are going to unravel eventually. Let nature take it's course. Stop trying to manage the world, white people!

They can unravel violently or modify peacefully and it is not in anyone's interests to have parts of the world viewing the US as the epitome of evil and targeting US citizens.

I agree, one culture shouldn't have the be all and end all say on all other cultures, but there are fundamental rights that all cultures should learn to respect, regardless of any belief system underpinning the culture.

I agree. We need an earth wide bill of rights. Good idea but yeah right. We have to respect people's culture of oppressing women or cast system segregation. BS. That ####### needs to end and people need to deal with it.

Sorry whitey, but the days y'all got to decide what those "fundamentals" are is coming to an end. I suggest you make peace with it.

It's not really a 'white' issue. There is only one way to adopt a position where everyone has the same fundamental rights, not allowing all to have the same rights requires a decision as to who's rights hold sway. Yes, it's true that historically whites have adopted the white is right and mighty rule, but today that's not the case. As we can't change the past, the only thing we can do is improve the future for everyone, not turn the tables and punish the whites, as retribution for past wrongs.

the only thing that has changed is the way whitey says it. gone is the incendiary racial supremacist rhetoric, replaced by a new agey lovey dovey touchy feely thing that has the exact same end result.

Well, that's one way to look at today's world. As of course I am white, privileged and have a posh English accent, I can only take your word for your current oppressed state, there is no way I can actually live that as you do. I do however apologise for my past colonial wrongs and offer reparations of a nice cup of tea and a cream scone.
