Female genital mutilation exposed in Swedish class
Published: 20 Jun 2014

Some 60 cases of genital mutilation have been discovered in Norrköping in eastern Sweden since March with all 30 girls in one school class found to have undergone the procedure.

Of the 30, some 28 of the girls were found to have been subjected to the most severe form of genital mutilation, when the clіtorіs and labіa are completely cut away and the genital area sewn together except for a small opening.

The abuse was discovered by the school health services, according to a report by Norrköpings Tidningar.

...
Female genital mutilation has been illegal in Sweden since 1982 and can be punished with up to four years in prison.

...

It is also an offence under Swedish law if the procedure is performed in a different country.

When school breaks up for the summer holidays the risk of being exposed to the surgery increases for many Swedish girls due to the prospect of visits to their parents' home countries.

...
Most girls who undergo the procedure are between the ages of 4-14 years, but the operation is also carried out on infants. Teenagers typically suffer a wide range of complications including period pains and headaches and for some it can be very painful to urinate.

Interesting this is how there is no mention at all of these "home countries" their parents take them back to. Which countries are these?

England?

Turkey?

Libya?

The Republic of China?

I found that quite odd myself.

Run the story without adding where the girls are from or what their religion is.

The people who read the story will know anyway

Probably.

It is true, and perhaps the reason is the author of the piece is actually more interested in the story from the angle of women's rights, than an attempt to further justify these acts by indicting national policies or other subjective factors. I believe that is a way to connect these women to many others whose rights are under attack everyday, even here in the US.

When you look at it, does it really matter what passport each of those girls carry? Will that make the injustice more or less justifiable?

However, you can get more information from the WHO in the link : http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs241/en/

Cultural, religious and social causes

The causes of female genital mutilation include a mix of cultural, religious and social factors within families and communities.

  • Where FGM is a social convention, the social pressure to conform to what others do and have been doing is a strong motivation to perpetuate the practice.
  • FGM is often considered a necessary part of raising a girl properly, and a way to prepare her for adulthood and marriage.
  • FGM is often motivated by beliefs about what is considered proper sexual behaviour, linking procedures to premarital virginity and marital fidelity. FGM is in many communities believed to reduce a woman's libido and therefore believed to help her resist "illicit" sexual acts. When a vaginal opening is covered or narrowed (type 3 above), the fear of the pain of opening it, and the fear that this will be found out, is expected to further discourage "illicit" sexual intercourse among women with this type of FGM.
  • FGM is associated with cultural ideals of femininity and modesty, which include the notion that girls are “clean” and "beautiful" after removal of body parts that are considered "male" or "unclean".
  • Though no religious scripts prescribe the practice, practitioners often believe the practice has religious support.
  • Religious leaders take varying positions with regard to FGM: some promote it, some consider it irrelevant to religion, and others contribute to its elimination.
  • Local structures of power and authority, such as community leaders, religious leaders, circumcisers, and even some medical personnel can contribute to upholding the practice.
  • In most societies, FGM is considered a cultural tradition, which is often used as an argument for its continuation.
  • In some societies, recent adoption of the practice is linked to copying the traditions of neighbouring groups. Sometimes it has started as part of a wider religious or traditional revival movement.
  • In some societies, FGM is practised by new groups when they move into areas where the local population practice FGM.

Yeah. Because that's where its happening and where it needs to be stopped.

I agree. Abuses against women - or any other human being for that matter - need to be stopped everywhere it takes place.

Good. And people shouldn't be able to hide under the guise of culture/tradition/religious bs to continue performing these horrid acts. And when you're taking about "abuses of women" IMO there should be a bit more urgency to stopping the sewing together of a female's reproductive organs than say tackling equal wages for equal work. Both are problems but one's more of a problem you know?

I also agree with that, however, so many abuses are committed under the guise of religion. Even in a developed country like the US we have religion as the basis for denying women the right to decide about their own reproductive choices. In that sense our women are not much more protected than these girls in Sweden. Albeit on different decks, they are all on the same boat.

I guess in our upside down world the writer of the story thought it would be politically incorrect to point out the obvious.
