Im waiting for my i-130 to be accepted at the moment. Is it possible to get a California ID without a SSN? I would like to get a state ID so I dont have to carry my passport around.

I saw on the news that they are letting illegal mexicans get drivers licenses since most drive illegally anyway so I figure there might be a chance for me to get some iD.

I tried to get a driver's permit with an expired I-94 and pending AOS and the DMV wouldn't let me. I do have an SSN (and had it for a long time) AND a state ID (not for driving). And an unexpired visa, and an I-20, and and....

What they require is "proof of legal presence", and they told me to come back with the USCIS approval letter. Yeah, guys, sometime in the next aeon, don't hold your breaths! But you can show them an EAD, that works too.

So no, I don't think it's possible. Maybe if you are on K-1, I don't know. As for letting illegals get them, they will change the policy to allow that next year... doesn't help us! Well, maybe some offices do...

Oh, and the application form requires your SSN.

Hi,

First we went to the DMV to get me a state ID with my SSN, passport with K1 visa on it. But told me I needed to come back with a green card!

I had to wait for quite some time and carried my passport with me at all times before finally the green card arrived.

Went back to the DMV to get the state ID.
