Sorry to deviate from topic discussed, I just need to know the service centre that will handle our file. We are also about to mail our package and my fiance lives in Tyler, Tx. so does his state of residence automatically put us in TSC?

Hi,

My fiancé and i are just about to send in our paperwork for the K1 visa. I have been reading this site for months and know that its very hard to pinpoint a time the visa could take.

I would like to go back to school and study for 10 months before leaving for the usa, would this be a smart idea? or are most K1 visas taking 1 year to be approved?

any advice would be great

This is like asking how many major hurricanes will hit the Gulf states this season....

The forecast is that there will be 12.1 tropical storms, 6.4 hurricanes, 2.7 major hurricanes; and of those 2 to hit the Gulf (unknown if major or 'normal' -if there is such a thing as a 'normal' hurricane.

Sometimes K1s happen in average fairly quick: 4-6 months, sometimes they take 10-12 months. There are always a few that get done in less than 2-3 months.

As others have noted, once you have the visa, you have 6 months to make it into the US.

Thus, it would seem that you can indeed take your 10 months back to school, without much risk. It is also possible to "delay" the execution of the visa by 'delaying' the medical exam and the returning of forms to setup interview. (that you can manage). Those also depend on the case itself, as there is a validity period for the case to be open.

Won't say that it is automatic as we are dealing with the government, but you can bet on 99.98879563% chance that he will be at TSC.

That was an arbitrary number with some humor applied but you get the idea. Prepare yourself for a long wait and get you some patience pills from the pharmacy :)

Mine was filed Dec 2012 and got the visa Sept 2013 which was typical for London at the time. Plus we got transferred from VSC to TSC. As stated the visa is good for 6 months plus (in London anyway) they will not schedule the interview until they have medical results and readiness form so you can control it a bit that way.

Lodged August 2013

USCIS approved September 2013

Embassy Interview November 2013 > approved

Left Australia February 2014

All up 6 months, but I was very pushy with this and it was top priority.

Ours took 162 days, and our case was in CSC. But then again, as what the others said, it really depends on different factors. CSC had a slowdown when we filed, but now it seems that they are processing faster than the other service centers.

There's a big possibility that your case will be processed in TSC.

At any rate, prepare yourself to wait. Better to assume that it's going to be a long wait and get your visa approved sooner than what you expected. Just check the Immigration Timelines here in VJ so you have an idea which dates are being processed in your service center. And just make sure (check and double check, even triple check) all documents (including the fee) and evidences are correct so you don't get an RFE.

Like others have said, you should be able to do your schooling. Even once approved, you have 6 months (from your medical date) to enter the US under your k1 Visa.

For me, we sent our petition in January. I had my medical in April and my interview in May. I was approved on the spot and will be doing my POE this week. So about 6 months in total for me... 5 months from start to approval.

Hello!!!

It Really depends on the country. My husband and I just got married in Feb. it took 11 months from the time we filed to get him back to the US. He is from Iraq and it seems like any visa from the Middle East takes about that long or longer depending on the situation. GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS :):):):):) !!!!

We filed September 11, and my interview is July 15. Assuming an approval, and no AP, I expect the visa by the end of July, almost 11 full months from filing. While we had an RFE, it was after 6 1/2 months of no movement.

As with any type of application, it is always a #######-shoot which desk your file lands on...some are quick, some are not. I know I had fully expected to be moved by March (7 months) and am still sitting waiting. What I learned is to have no expectations and to take it as it comes - there is nothing you can do to speed it up.

Good luck

9 months and TSC. We lucked out at a few points. One is that we went to TSC while they were fast. RIght now they are realy busy. And although we had to wait 2 1/2 months to get our interview in Manila, that was right before the Yolanda disaster prioroty program really froze things up. Had we been unlucky on both counts, it could have been 1 1/2 years.

My fiancé lives in New York and I am Australian… so don't know which service centre we will be sent to….

hopefully the fastest one!

We had a Lawyer look over our forms which seems to be delaying the process as the forms should have been sent weeks ago. Thanks for everyones input.

I think there's a good chance New York will go to TSC, but am hoping that yours will end up in CSC instead.

Good luck with your case and schooling should you decide to do it.
