(CNN) -- An alleged former Nazi camp guard who has lived in the United States since the 1950s is facing possible extradition to Germany following his arrest in Philadelphia, authorities said Wednesday.

Federal authorities are moving to extradite Johann (John) Breyer, an 89-year-old U.S. citizen, who is wanted in Germany for war crimes committed during World War II.

Breyer was arrested in Philadelphia, where he has long lived, on Tuesday. Federal Magistrate Judge Timothy R. Rice on Wednesday ordered him held without bail, pending an extradition hearing in late August.

According to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, German authorities have charged Breyer with complicity in the murder of over 216,000 European Jews from Hungary, Germany, and Czechoslovakia, who were forcibly deported to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp on 158 trains between May and October 1944.

I say we have already exacted the justice for the Nazi blight. The guy is 89 and in 10 more years none of the victims or perpetrators will be left anyway. We have moved on, I think it does more hard than good to drudge it up again

It's never too late for justice.

Does this not contradict your being in favor of a US gov't apology for their involvement in slavery? Aren't the people that were involved in slavery all dead now too?

If he did participate in the atrocities that took place at Auschwitz then he does need to be sent to trial. I do not believe that all the prison guards were in a position to object to what went on, but clearly some 'enjoyed' their work more than others. He should be held responsible for what he was responsible for, the holocaust was a crime against humanity. It's not too late to hold him to account.

And never a movement or attempt to bring to justice those in Russia who killed over 10 million innocents, maybe closer to 20 million under Stalin.

I actually agree that the deaths of the Russians at the hands of Stalin is also an atrocity but really, it's got nothing at all to do with holding those who are responsible for Auschwitz and other Nazi 'final solution' camps responsible for what they did so I am not sure why you are bringing it up here.

If the Nazis were held accountable, why not the Russians? That's the only reason I brought it up, it made me think. Both were horrible atrocities, all involved were following orders in some way shape or form.

I would imagine the Cold War had a lot do to with it.
