Preference for non-American mates

I agree with the accent thing  I love listening to my husband speak. He has found he has to speak slower here, but people go crazy for the accent. You dont hear a N. Ireland accent often around here, British or Southern Irish are more common.

U.K. accents are pretty nice in general (though I've heard a few pretty bizarre ones).

Speaking of accents, my cousin is married to an Egyptian with a low, deep incredibly smooth and sexy voice. When they were "dating", she used to call him and pass the phone around just so her friends could hear his voice. I think a lot of eggs split each time. Now, I hear it all the time, no biggie anymore.

I think there's probably a lot of truth in all of that! I remember a few years ago I was on holiday in San Francisco, and was wondering why I'd suddenly become about 1000% more attractive to the opposite sex since stepping off the plane. Men (intelligent, attractive, friendly, articulate, pleasant, sober ones, I mean!!) were (I swear) pretty much throwing themselves at me. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN!!! EVER!!! I eventually figured it out... ahhh, it's my accent, it must be my accent! I must've suddenly come into some category of exciting exoticness that I obviously don't figure in at home - that was a very strange experience!!

I'll bet on the accent too. I have a good friend in her 60's who immigrated to the US more than 20 years ago. British mother, Maltese father. Exotic looks, even at her age, but I don't care where we are, when she speaks, men go into whiplash looking for where that interesting sound comes from. I learned English from a couple of Australian anthros who were studying my family. I can do Aussie and British accents, among others. Accents work as an aprodesiac, and they work well!

That's funny... that 'men go into whiplash' thing was pretty much what happened - guys appearing from out of nowhere trying to detect 'which one' they heard the English accent coming from! I wish I could 'do' any accent but my own even remotely convincingly - it'd be interesting to see what different reactions I could get... I was going to say you should try it, but it sounds like you already have!

It is very strange when someone says 'I love your accent' - I really have no idea what you're supposed to say to that!

I remember TracyTN once saying that her ovaries would fairly spit eggs whenever her fiance' spoke.

... I just had to remark on what a fantatic and utterly classic quote that is!

I have a bunch of accents, and in high school I used to use them to my great advantage. Still do.

I thought so too; quite visual!

OMG....I laugh at myself whenever I allow my husband's voice to get to me! Because it still can sometimes.....there's that little upswing lilt at the end of all sentences. And then the COMPLETELY different tone of a few sounds.

I remember TracyTN once saying that her ovaries would fairly spit eggs whenever her fiance' spoke. I think that wears off with most of us after a while.

But every now and then I allow myself to just LISTEN to my husband talk, and enjoy it full-throttle tilt. I consider it a fringe benefit of our relationship!!!!

LOL ... agreed!!! My fiance is Canadian, but does not have a "typical" Canadian accent. He spent time living in Australia and England and has an intriguing accent that picks up a little from each place. Unfortunately, I don't hear his accent much anymore ... but then go out in public with him and watch people try to figure the accent out and it gets to me again :)

About the OP, I don't think I necessarily had a preference for a non-American mate. I wasn't looking to meet someone romantically from another country, it just happened and here I am!

It is very strange when someone says 'I love your accent' - I really have no idea what you're supposed to say to that!

Hahahahahaha.....well, my husband just blushes, smiles sweetly, and says 'thank you'.

Then the woman passes out.

:lol::lol::lol:

Is there anyone out there who isn't a sucker for a nice Irish accent?! Nope, thought not!

On that note... I really really really really must go to bed. I think it's getting light outside. Bad VJ, BAD!!!

Thank you all for the conversation and keeping me from my bed... 'night! :)

I love the British accent, specially the women, someone can curse at yah, somehow it sounds polite LOL

My family is very open minded and almost like the UN. Our mother always taught us to see people for who they are, don't pay too much attention to the outside, look at the person insight, as such we always see if the person is nice, caring, color, skin, even culture can take a backseat when Love get into the picture. I met my wife while I was working on a project in India, My brother's wife is Japanese, my little brother's wife is Jamaican.

Gone but not Forgotten!

You're right, you do get used to it after a while...but same as you Rebecca, when I take time to actually listen to it, I still just *love* it! When everyone here was first going on and on about Craig's accent, he told me that in England when Irish guys are in the pubs, *those* are the ones all the girls flock to and drool over...so it must be an Irish thang! Or just that difference you were all talking about.

Wasn't that "eighteen" that Tracy liked?? Oh no, I forgot....it was any 'een' ..just have to make sure to lose the t. M.
