Preference for non-American mates

I was thinking the other day that this is my second marriage and, although I am American born (not ethnically American tho), I have never considered marrying an American man. Then, I looked around at my family and noticed a trend: few of them are married to Americans or have ever been. Folks in my family have/had Lebanese, Canadian, Palestinian (lots of them), Bolivian, Irish, Filipine, Indian, Moroccans (lots of them), Chilean, Israeli, Maltese, Mexican, Dutch, and South African spouses. I can credit myself for one Lebanese and one Moroccan. Perhaps we have a preference for non-Americans.

Do you?

My family definitely has a preference for non-Americans although maybe that's just how it worked out. My father is not American-born and my sister's husband is not American either.

I'm a caucasian US citizen and my ex-wife is also caucasian. I wasn't looking for a white woman when we met, it just turned out that way. The woman I'm petitioning now (my wife, Lina) is a Filipina and we met by chance. I was on a cruise ship with friends and she was working on the ship. I never thought I'd meet my wife then and there but it happened and I couldn't be happier. I will say that I have always been attracted to Asian women and I have Filipina friends (all married) so I do know something of and like the Philippine culture. Maybe that was the reason I talked with her in the ship casino for several hours...?

I am married to a Canadian but it just happened that he is from another country. Neither of us deliberately sought out a non-american spouse, however I am glad it happened...he's the best thing to happen to me in a very long time. :luv:

No one in my family is married to a non-American, except for myself. I don't think I had a strong preference for a non-American over an American man; I just happened to meet the right man and he happened to not be from the USA. God knows I've tried to have relationships with American guys, but they never materialized. I do see that my husband has some good qualities that I never found in any of the American guys I dated, but I don't know whether that's an individual thing or because he isn't American. Ah well!

My fiance is the first non-American relationship I've ever had. I've never sought out a relationship with someone because they were American or not, it just happened. In my whole family, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one with a non-American SO.

I remembered something and it is probably more on track with the topic so I wanted to add it...

Shortly after my divorce in 2000 I met a coworker who is Thai. I helped her with her home computer a few times so we got to know each other as friends. One day at work she came in my office and closed the door. She confided in me about a problem with her on again/off again boyfriend. He cheated on her several times and one time hit her when he was drunk. She asked me what she should do. I advised her to leave him and I'll admit I was biased (I liked her) in that advice but I would've given the same advice to anyone in her situation. She knew I liked her and she liked me as well but she told me her father wouldn't let her date a non-Asian man (her boyfriend was also Thai) because he was very old fashioned. Not long after that our company went belly up, we all got laid off, and we lost touch. About a year later I learned that she was pregnant from the same boyfriend. They married not long after that. It was maybe 3-4 years ago that a mutual friend told me she was miserable. She was working full time + weekends and all of her money goes the family. He worked too but apparently has a gambling problem. My friend tried to convince her to take the child and leave him but he threatened to fight any custody. She didn't want to embarrass her family name with divorce either. Well, this is kinda long winded but my point is I don't think it's good idea to choose or not choose someone based on their race or nationality. Were it not for my friend's fathers bias she probably would've left her boyfriend, not gotten pregnant, and not gotten forced into a marriage as a result.

My mom's parents immigrated to America from Byelorussia (now known as Belarus) before the Bolshevik Revolution and the creation of the USSR. After the USSR dissolved it became easier for Americans to travel there and many of my American relatives began visiting our relatives in Belarus and Russia. I had an opportunity to stay with my relatives there and tour both countries. On one of my many trips over there I met my wife. She was an English teacher and my cousin's daughter was in her English class in Belarus. I was first introduced to her in 1999 and we kept in touch as friends at first. We will soon be married 3 years in March.

I am 100% American and do not speak Russian fluently. I have nothing against American women. That is not the reason I am with my Russian wife. I just met the right woman and she happens not to be American...yet. Maybe she will be in the future if that is her choice.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Looks like I'll be the first to play the semantic game.

I married a Canadian. From North America. Common colloqualisms aside, pretty much anybody from North or South America is American, so that's like....1/3 of all populated continents.

As for the general gist of your question.....I married the woman I fell in love with, not her geographical or socio-political status.

Oldest brother married a woman from Equador who he met in college. Next brother's first wife was German who he met while stationed in Germany. Next brother's first wife was black whom he met at work - his second wife is Somoan - not sure where he met her but it was here in the states. Youngest brother married a woman from the Czech Republic whom he met when stationed in Germany. My ex-wife was hispanic and my last significant relationship, my gf was Puerto Rican. I'm sure all of us have our tastes in terms of physical features as well as personality types. I grew up in Arizona and most of the girls I had crushes on in school were latina - not sure why...maybe because they're different from me.

I think both Scarlett Johansson and Beyonce are gorgeous but if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Beyonce. :star:

Wow, Steve, your family sounds like mine!

:P Even my parents have half-heartedly joked/complained about why us boys couldn't just have married someone from the same culture, especially after many of us have had failed marriages. My parents still insist that the differences in culture add to the already difficult challenges of marriages. I've argued that commonalities and sets of values are not confined to one culture. I think what kind of family life your SO had growing up has more to do with compatiblity than culture.
