  1. 1. 28% of Americans believe slavery warrants an apology. Are you part of that 28%?

  2. 2. Talking about slavery and black issues -

    • Makes me uncomfortable. The past is ugly, it's time to let go. It's a sunny day and the future is bright!

    • Is good. The past makes us who we are. There is no better way to understand our fellow Americans than to understand and empathize with their story.
    • Only commies want to talk about slavery and black issues. Murka!

On behalf of all typical southern rednecks who had family that could have owned a few slaves.

I hereby apologize for the great stain on this country's great history that was slavery, and for the subsequent years of pseudo slavery that existed in this country.

No for christ sakes can we move on.

Do you think there should be an official apology, passed by both houses of Congress and signed by POTUS?

Well, I don't believe there should be an apology. So I'm clearly not race baiting, I'm being fair and balanced.

Where have I heard this before?

It's funny, something so small is so hard to do.

It seems like an official apology will later be used as evidence of admission of guilt in some sort of class action reparations lawsuit.

Evidence of guilt?

Does that not already exist?

The White House itself was (partially or wholly) built with slave labor, no? That's your evidence.

Is an apology from the people that weren't directly involved in slavery all that meaningful in the first place?

Yes. becuse our leaders represent the same Govt that offcialy allowed slavery. Don't forget the US flag flew over slavery for over 100 years. I do think a govt issued formal apology and some kind official recognition of the great tragedy of slavery should happen.

Ironically our current President would do it. It came up in GA not to long ago, a family member who is one of the top 5 or 6 positioned politicians in the state asked me about it, I told him i thought it was the thing to do, just like I did when he sponsored the bill to change the flag. It was the right thing to do.

I am very realistic about the wrongs we have done to blacks in this country. I am also very realistic about the damage massive govt programs and affirmative action are doing to them, some think my views are racist, but it is becuse I want them to thrive and do well. It makes our country better.

The US apologized to Japanese-US citizens they put in interment camps during WW2. That was appropriate and this would be too IMO. Its not like everyone would have to sign an apology. Just an official US government apology.

Yes, but that apology came at a time when a good amount of those people were still alive. I'm not saying an apology is wrong, I just don't see the meaning behind it when the apology is for something that happened so long ago and no one involved is still alive.

From you, I'll take a pepsi and a hamburger. We'll call it even.

Marv, I'll even throw in the fries and supersize it for you buddy!

Perhaps we should let our states issue individual apologies, then.

That also, but the US flag and our Govt condoned slavery for many years.

I don't believe Boehner would even consider a vote. He is too busy working on his tan and thinking of another infallible way to repeal the ACA....

Yes without a doubt 100% yes and it should include an apolgy for all the years of apartheid, the only blacks working in Govt being busboys and butlers, the years of the only blacks working in city govts being trash collectors and street sweeper, the years being called boy and riding on the back of the bus, apologizes for all the blacks that have died because they could not be treated in white emergency rooms, the years of having a separate military and all you could be is a truck driver or cook..... I could go on for 6 pages

Totally agree. It's the right thing to do, it's long overdue, and for Christ sake it is such a simple thing to do

we often disagree on race, but one thing my people say that I find so frustrating, " well I never owned slaves". Sigh

Yep. The Government that allowed it still exists. That should be enough. They just need to word it in a way that ensures they are ONLY apologizing to those directly affected by slavery
