I am unable to find something on this; hence creating this thread.

I have applied for the K-1 fiance visa for my fiance and we plan to get married soon after she

receives her K-1. We are expecting my fiance's visa to come through Jan-March 2015.

She has a child who will be finishing high school overseas by March/April 2015

and will be applying for University Admissions in the US for Fall 2015 admissions. Questions

in our mind are the following:

1. The child's application deadline (International Student) seems to be around October/November 2014.

Will she need to apply as an international student ? I am guessing so as the K-1 and K-2 will not

come through by that time. Can someone share some experiences ?

2. Once she receives her offer of admission, what is the best way for the child ? Come to the US on the K-2 ?

If so, can she start classes on the K-2 while we wait for the AOS to complete ?

3. International Students Admissions usually send an I-20 for an F-1 visa. Should we tell the Universities

not to send an I-20 ?

Any prior experience on how to navigate this would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

A lot depends on the admission policy and residency requirements at the particular college/university the child will attend.

We found it much cheaper and easier to establish residency as soon as possible.

Read posting #137 at this pinned thread at the Family-based AOS Forum:

There is a lot of information at that thread that should be useful for you. Use the forum's search function to find more.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Hi. I have been looking for some information about this because I want to study for a master degree when i get there.

First, you should check university websites. You can find useful information there and you can start asking about her situation. I think it will be better if she applies when she gets the resident card. It will be cheaper but she will need all the documentation that an international student needs (Transcripts, TOEFL and others).

Also, there are companies that validate in the US your studies in another country but you have to check with the university because sometimes, they request validation from specific companies.

My stepson was able to start his college studies at the local community college within two weeks of his arrival to the US. The first quarter (fall quarter) we paid non-resident tuition. My wife and stepson applied for and received their GCs in November 2012. My stepson received in-state resident status the following February, retroactive to when he received his GC. Become acquainted with and work with the financial aids office at the particular college, they were invaluable in helping navigate through the process. Check out the link I previously provided for details.

Good luck.
