Absolutely! You are adjusting status based on MARRIAGE to a USC - why would you even question this? Have you not looked at the I485 form yet? Check the guides and examples. If you are worried about a xerox copy versus a certified copy - then you can send whatever. Though there is some talk that a certified copy may help get you transferred to Cali and a Green card without an interview. Good Luck

You can send a photocopy of the certified copy with the application. Take the original certified copy to the AOS interview.

Motu has been a bit heavy handed!! Believe me, I know the answer to this question. My wife had her AOS interview this morning!!

I sent in the actual Certified Marriage Cert...but only because they only cost $2 here. A copy of it is fine too

Yup, send in a certified, real copy that you get from your county clerk. Usually copies are not too expensive; mine were $10, but I live in a large city.

Right in the I-485 instructions. You need just a regular photocopy. Not a certified copy/photocopy.

I know you can send in a photocopy but I personally decided to send in an original, they were only two dollars a certificate after the first one you bought (that one was 13$) so i figured, meh why not... maybe it'll get to Cali

Uh-oh, now I'm worried and thinking I should have sent in the certified copy. But they cost $15 each! However, it's probably better to lose the $15 than get an RFE.

The OP asked what was required. The answer is a regular photo-copy. If people want to send more that's up to them but it's imported for them to know what is the actual requirement is in the first place. It's very clear in the I-485 instructions. It also is clear when they say they can request to original of ANY document.

I still ordered one additional copy for the AOS because I thought it would be worth it....even if the instructions don't state specifically that they want only certified copies, it might save a few days in the long run.....and honestly, after all those expenses we had already, we just closed our eyes in pain and wrote the check for the marriage certificates

We sent a copy of the original marriage certificate, and have not been RFE'd. If you're concerned, what you can do is make a photo copy of the original marriage certificate and get it notarized. That should suffice for the application. Then, for the actual interview, take th eoriginal, certified certificate.
