My mother is in the process of moving to the US on a non-immigrant visa which entitles her to work here in the US. As she is very uneasy about not having health insurance she was thinking about coming over for a week to visit and also apply for her SSN and then going back to wrap things up back home before moving here permanently. With the I 94 now being online, how soon after entering the country can she go to the local social security office with a high chance of them finding her in their system and if the card hasn't been sent by the time she flies back home would that cancel her SSC?

Would be grateful for people with experience to shed light, please!

Many thanks!

Depends on how well trained the SSA people at your local office are and if they know that she is eligible for a SSN. You can go on-line and get the I-94 when it is available--maybe 1 to 2 days. Then go to the local SSA office and apply for the SSC. If everything goes well, you can go back in a couple of days and request the actual number be printed out. Her leaving has nothing to do with the SSC. As long as her visa allows her to enter and leave the US without the visa being canceled it does not matter. You are dealing with two separate government agencies without different rules and procedures and they do not talk to each other.

Good luck,

Dave
