Re-establishing domicile after 15 years abroad

I've read the wiki and i've seen the list of possible evidence for re-establishing domilicile, trouble is most we don't have. After 15 years abroad, my USC husband has transferred everything to Australia. We will be moving to the US together once I have my green card. I am at a bit of a loss to how I can prove we are committed to re-establishing life in the US after such a long absence. Anyone in the situation?

There are some things you can do, but a lot will depend on WHY you want to move. For example if it's for a job, bring job offer. If it is because of elderly family members needing care, bring doctors letters, if it is for better educational opportunities for kids, enroll them in a school in the US and show proof.

What a lot of ex=pats do, and what my husband did, is take a short vacation in the US before filing or shortly after. Use this time to buy or lease a home (or at least show proof you were looking), renew the drivers license, get a US bank account, sign on with a couple of job agencies, maybe even get a cheap cell phone with a billing address in the USA.

Thanks for those ideas. I think that's what he will have to do and we'll just have to delay the whole process. Thanks

A small amount of proof is generally sent to the NVC but majority of it is needed at interview day.

If you're going to be living with a relative for a short period of time, get a rental agreement with them, for example. Something like that or a renewal of a driver's license online (which some states do) might get you through the NVC so that he can get to the USA to get the rest for interview.

Thanks NLR.. I will get a family member to write a declaration we will be living with them temporarily and will look into what we can set up online. If that's approved at NVC then that gives us more time to plan a trip back before interview. I'm ready to submit the I-864 now so think I'll give it a shot! Thanks for your help
