Hi everyone! Im a new immigrant in California and I wanna start applying for work now, open a bank account, get a government ID. And all of theses needs my SSC. Luckily, I received my SSC 1 week after my arrival, but unluckily my name is not complete. My name is long and I understand that they have to cut it short. But they just cut it in such a way that my name would appear unreadable or wrong.

Just an example: Jonathan Andrew Lee Tan ---> Jonathan And Lee Tan (it does not seem right!)

Now I want to change it. I went to Social security office, but they could not do about this. They said its thru immigration. When I called immigration, they said its the social security. Not i dont know what to do. Guys, if you had this prob before pls give me an advise. Thanks!

As long as the Social Security Administration has your correct name, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks! But I want to correct it coz it really sounds wrong. Any info how to do this?

What is the name on your visa you entered the US on? For now that is the only thing you can use to get the SSC and the name will be the same as it is on those documents. For SSA purposes your name is your given name and your surname (first and last name) they really do not care about your middle name. Once you get you GC with any name change due to marriage, you can go back to the SSA and get your name changed. You can get a printout of what the SSA has related to your SSN at your local office just to see if it has the complete correct name verses what your card has.

I would wait until you get the GC with the name you want to use here in the US and then go back to the SSA and get you SSC name changed to that name. This may require you to wait until you file for ROC if the current GC will arrive in your maiden name and you want to use your married name.

Good luck,

Dave

I'm not American, but I am anglo-Canadian and have a very long francophone-sounding name (francophone father) with a double first name (as is common to many Catholic regions, where often your name is a double first name and you go by the second name of the double first name, especially if you are a Mary blank, a Marie blank, a Maria blank, etc). Truncating or cutting off part of the name on ID cards and official documents is very common, unfortunately. As long as the issuing body has the correct name, you will be fine, but mostly they cannot fix it on the card because the cards have a character limit. This even happened on my NOA1!

For example, if my name is Marie Antoinette Mélisa Beauregard (Marie Antoinette being my first name, I was raised, for the purposes of this example, as Toni), I quite often end up with Marie Antoinet Beauregard or Marie Antoinette Mé Beauregard or sometimes Marie Ant Beauregard.

Anglophones are not used to long given names and their computers are not programmed to deal with either double first names or long names. You will likely have to put up with this. Sometimes you can 'trick' the computer by finding out if the first name or middle name field has more characters available and having them type in a name in the name field that's longest. For example, I might have them put "Marie" as my first name and "Antoinette Mélisa" as my middle name if the middle name field is longer than the first name field.
