Well... Not if you are Germany or Portugal but if you are the US sure :) Most likely this means we finish 3rd instead of 4th and still don't advance.. We can always hope Portugal is demoralized and pulls a couple of draws or another loss.

In the gambling pools Ghana was slightly favored to win.

I have now hit the limit of my soccer knowledge.

Ghana basically outplayed the US but fluffed a bunch of scoring chances, the real winner of the US team was the goalie :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Do any of you think the US can beat Portugal? If we beat Portugal, we can advance as I think that Germany is going to go 3-0.

That depends on how they deal with being thoroughly embarrassed by a team with which they were supposed to be on a par. Being temperamental, Portugal have about a 50:50 chance of imploding badly. If they do, the US is sorted for the next round, as the team has enough attacking potential to worry the opposition.

On the other hand, if Portugal takes this result as a swift kick up the butt, the US might be onto a right pasting. Because on their day, Portugal are rather good.

I thought that Portugal was supposed to be as good as Germany too. I know very little about soccer, but this time around I'm following it more closely to share it with my wife. In Brasil it's really the only sport. The Microsoft store was giving away bracket posters for the World Cup, so I got one so we can keep tabs on what's going on. I proudly filled in the 2-1 score for the US. It helps me learn a bit about the teams and my wife likes to see which cities the games are taking place in.

I'm hoping the US got a big boost from the wind today and that Portugal plays no better than they did against Germany. I realize that it's highly likely the US will get crushed too. They do seem to have a good goalie and the defense made some good plays, but Ghana blew a half a dozen good chances. Geoff Cameron, #20 on defense for the US is a MA native from Attleboro. He made some good plays today too. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a good performance on Sunday. My wife is looking forward to Brasil and Mexico tomorrow afternoon.

And it's a true story too. I'm so used to the rules and play of American Football that I have to learn that there are fouls in soccer, like in basketball. And the clock doesn't stop when the ball goes out of bounds or a player gets hurt or there is a stoppage in play like it does in our football. But then they add time on at the end to make up for it. In most sports, the clock counts down backwards so it shows the time remaining. In soccer it starts at zero and goes up so you have to mentally calculate how much time is left, but then you really don't know how much time is left until the end of the half when they add some time back on. Personally I don't like that method.

Soccer seems to be quite similar to hockey, but you can't hit the opposing players and flatten them. I'm trying my best to learn the rules and various fouls. I see what seems like acting at times too, a guy falls over holding his leg or head and nobody even touched him. Or other times someone is laying on the ground, grimacing in pain and holding his leg, and 10 seconds later is running around like nothing happened, until an opponent comes close to him and the same scenario repeats.

These guys have a lot of stamina and they run up and down the field continuously. Lots of effort expended, that's for sure and not lots of substituting. The only way I'd run that much is if something that could hurt me was chasing me and I didn't have a gun with me.:devil:

All joking aside, some of the plays are really good. I enjoyed watching Germany play. I was beyond happy to see the US win against their nemesis. I hope we beat Portugal, I can't wait to mark the score on my poster. Or maybe I better say, our poster. It's hanging on the wall in my office. But I let her go in there when she wants to.

Like everyone else in the world cup I wish Iran and Nigeria were in my teams group. That game was awful and both of them are ****

Well done to the US, can't see them beating the two big teams in their group but Portugal looked very off colour and if Ronaldo isn't up for it then they might be there for the taking. Germany are too good for the US, was good to see them playing 3 Arsenal players in Ozil, Podolski and Mertesacker.

In addition to the score, it was a symbolic win for the US, more like payback for the last two World Cups, so it is natural everyone was riled up a bit.

Multiply than about ten fold and that would be my wife's face-book after Colombia won. I think its awesome. A sports fan has to enter the sport at some point - I've only watched a few games before this year and have never enjoyed watching the games. This year I've enjoyed watching all of them.

Agreed. There is history with Ghana in the World Cup and this really was a huge win for the US. The demons have been cast out. Focus on Portugal. Maybe Shane Stant is still for hire.
