England will lose and go home with their tale between their legs. They don't play the right sort of football.

I regret buying them cowbells my ears are still ringing. I was openly rooting against a third goal... And my poor dogs were splashed all over facebook.

Well Ball nuggets.. Sorry England good guys can't win them all.. On the bright bright if Uruguay goes all the way and beats Brazil they won't have to worry about what to do with those new stadiums as they will be burned to the ground.

There was an NPR story of a player that was snubbed from the games this year because he scored the winning pint against Brazil the last time the world cup was in hel there.. in 1950! *That* is holding a grudge:

Soccer-Uruguay World Cup hero Ghiggia not invited to opener

SAO PAULO, June 11 (Reuters) - Alcides Ghiggia, the man who scored the winning goal for Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup, is set to miss the first match of the 2014 tournament because FIFA has not invited him as a guest or given him a ticket, he said on Wednesday.

"I am not going to the game as I don't have a ticket," the 87-year old Ghiggia told reporters, referring to Thursday's opening match between hosts Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo.

Ghiggia, the last surviving member of the side that beat Brazil 2-1 to lift Uruguay's second world title, was a specially invited guest at the World Cup draw in Bahia in December but complained he was overlooked by organizers this time.

"This is the first time that... this has happened," he told reporters outside the FIFA Congress on Wednesday.

They can still tie for second and end up going through right?? Assuming they win the last game and Italy wins out as well...

Yes - and score enough goals to swing the goal differential in their favour. Unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

It wasn't all bad, Rooney did score, finally. The second Uruguay goal was a gift by a very flat footed England defense. They deserved to lose. Still, there are some good youngsters, hopefully in 4 years time they will have learned how to play against Latin American style football :)

I know next to nothing about the game, but from talking to those I encounter from Central and South America, I was under the impression that the Brits and Europeans played a more physical game and the South of the Border teams didn't like this type of game.

No, they won't have. Let me tell you how it works with England, come EVERY European Championship or World Cup. We (usually) qualify comfortably enough, and the media starts whipping the nation into a frenzy, to the point where we all think that we have a genuine chance of "at least getting to the semi-finals!" Then, when the tournament starts, we produce tepid, uninspiring performances, and lose at the hands of the first far more technically gifted team we encounter, usually on penalties (tbf, this usually happens in the quarter-finals, but then usually we only play cr@p teams up to that point - not the case this time around).

After the usual early exit, the same media that had us all believe the England team were world-beaters conduct an enquiry as to where it all went wrong. Terms like "grass roots" and "technical ability" abound, and every sports radio show listener can't wait to get on the phone to chip in their 2 cents as to how to fix things. But things are never fixed. It happens every time. And it will NEVER change.

England's style of play is based on pace and work rate, whereas Continental European teams employ a higher degree of technical skill and tend to play a slower game. England's game is unsuited to Brazil's heat and humidity and their fatigue showed toward the end of both of their matches in this tournament. Qatar in 2022 will be a nightmare. :(

Latin American teams play with more natural flair and don't like dealing with the physicality of the European game. Mind you, when they're on top of their game, they can take apart a European team and make it look easy. ;)

It was mid-fifties Fahrenheit during England's game today - like a Thursday night in Sheffield. No excuses. We were cr@p. Again.
