G325 - No record of FIL's birth date

On my husband's G325, it asks for the birthdate of both his parents. His father only know the year he was born and not the month or day. He's older and I guess the Moroccan gov't wasn't keeping very accurate records back in 1942.

Should my husband just put "1942" when asked for his father's birthdate or should he do that and write a separate note explaining the issue? Or something else?

I'm not sure what the official USCIS rule is, but my fiance has the same issue with both of his parents. We put 01/01/1942 (for example) on our G325. He has successfully used that date on past visa applications (Schengen, UK) and his father has flown on airline tickets when we put that for his birthday (his passport only says the year of birth and not a date, but airlines require the full date). That being said, maybe someone else has USCIS-specific insight.

Do not put a fake date, as the above suggests.

Morocco puts the first day of the year for parents birth dates when unknown (no record keeping). Its very common practice there. I asked during an infopass meeting with USCIS and they told me they see that a lot in third world countries for parents birthdates.

We put Jan 1 and the year for his parents. Had no problems.
