Hi,

My question is: My nephew came over and is submitting the 864 like usual....his us citizen spouse is the main sponsor and her 1yr old. My husband and I are the joint sponsors being they don't make enough income. Are we counting in household 5 people or just 3 for household size, we DONT LIVE WITH THEM.

We as individuals make enough for 3 people ...but not for 5 without us combined together, which I believe the gov't doesn't consider I believe. How do we classify household size??

Household size means the number of people you support. It does not mean the number of people living in the same house. In your case, as the joint sponsors your household size is 3: you, your husband, and your nephew (the person you are sponsoring).

Your own household count plus the immigrant you are sponsoring. If it is just the 2 of you with no other dependents, then you add on the person you are agreeing to sponsor and that makes a total of 3.

How to count household size >

Your household size includes yourself and the following individuals, no matter where they live: any spouse, any dependent children under the age of 21, any other dependents listed on your most recent Federal income tax return, all persons being sponsored in this affidavit of support, and any immigrants previously sponsored with a Form I-864 or Form I-864 EZ
