I am not sure I understand the concept of fancy or rare words. The vast majority of words in the English language have one entry in the dictionary, therefore they can all be considered rare or fancy; one no more special than the other. In fact, I would argue that all words in a language - any language - are common and ordinary for they can be used by anyone. There is no fee to be paid for the use of a specific subset of a lexicon; at least not in English.

Of course, I could be wrong, in which case can you be more precise as to what is required for a word to earn its place in the 'fancy' category?

Good communicators know their audience and tailor their language to their audience.

Don't tempt me. Janelle and I talked about this with him several times. He has no black friends, doesn't interact with them, and has no family members who were black. This is why it caused a big issue. He was willing to come here and rag on the black community day in, day out. Yet had no connection with us. In fact, his own words, he was the JFK of race relations. He wanted to change things without actually communing with a black person.

I got a black guy I use to work with that I talk to in the grocery store.. and I have a black VJ friend.. Do I qualify

Oh yes I dated a couple of black women one time, but it was mainly sex and boobs.

Speaking of talking funny, here's the first paragraph of an article I ran across this morning on LinkedIn.

Our customers feel and align their perceptions to areas based on a continual experience rather than a single time based intervention. Any experience has to be a smooth transitory curve that needs to align with the majority of expectations from a customer. Any misalignment on these expectations causes reverberations on the 'perceptive realisations' of our customers.

I get what the author is trying to say but I hate it when parsing language gives me a headache.

Didn't you get the memo? You have to have at least 2 black friends to not count as a racist. You're sitting at one(barely)

when i first joined this lovely web portal - many things got by - unfiltered and folk wrote here in unfiltered mode. those days are past - no one will be unfiltered here anymore (unless of course a private area is opened up for that exact purpose)

It was fun back then! Can you imagine a username like this being accepted today?
