Hi Everyone,

Hmmm...Good question. In answer to the original poster of this message thread, my answer to them would be do whatever feels right for the both of you regarding the last name and the rings. After all, who says that you need to follow tradition?

As for my own situation, regarding the married last name, I filed my paperwork after I got married and everything else (except for the passport that I came into the US with) I have in my married last name, so paperwork-wise it was easier that way. More importantly, I like my married last name, and I love my husband and feel that this is respectful for him and his family. I overall hated my maiden last name, which I had no connection with my former family (my ex-so-called family that have now pretty much disowned me), and growing up my former maiden last name caused a lot of confusion and I was made fun of quite a bit because of it.

As for the wedding rings, well, I wear mine on my hand (switching fingers from time to time, due to extreme hot/cold climate change that affects finger sizing), showing the love that my husband and I share together. But in the end it doesn't matter where one wears the ring though (or if they wear a ring at all), as a ring is merely a symbol of love, not of the actual love that people really have for each other.

I did not change my name to married name because all the paperwork was done under maiden name. Other than that, most professional experience & qualifications I got are all in maiden name.

Overall, for now, it is just simpler to keep my maiden name. Although it is difficult for people to pronounce it since it is Indonesian name.

I do wear wedding ring. Hubby used to wear his, but he lost it. I didn't think anything changed in our marriage since he lost his ring except we will be off a couple of hundred dollars if we decide to replace it :D

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question, me and my fiance are just embarking on the K1 visa process but have a concern about the name change and wedding rings once I move to the US. Both myself and my fiance are not particularly traditional and after discussion we decided that when we marry she wants to keep her name and as opposed to traditional rings we will wear rings on necklaces to show our commitment to eachother.

My only concern is, will this be hard to explain, or will it appear suspicious? If so I'm sure we can come to some compromise, but in both our eyes traditional rings or a name change do not make us any more committed to one another.

Any responses or advice would be helpful!

Thanks!

I dont think it will matter at all. In fact when I married my fiance (I was on a k-1 visa), my lawyer prepared the adjustment of status paperwork and asked whether i wanted to be known by my married name or keep my maiden name. Also when I got married, the registrar asked whether we had rings at our first meeting. We did but she said that some people dont and its not a requirement (wel not in VA anyway). I would check with the state you are planning to move to but as far as I am aware, rings are not necessary to perform a legal marriage ceremony.

good luck guys !

I did not change my name to my maiden name after my divorce because I did not want to have a different last name than my children. My 'married name' was also the name I built my career on. So, for the same reasons, I did not change it when David and I married.

We had custom wedding rings made to indicate some of the symbolism in our relationship and we wear our wedding rings on our right hands.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

When my fiance enters on the K1 soon and we get married, I still plan on keeping my maiden name. Its short & cute, I like his also, but for now want to stay with my current name. When we have our religious ceremony later down the line, then I'll change it. When I discussed the last name issue with my fiance, he joked and said it's ok... that if I dont want to, he can change his to mine

About the rings, we will wear them on our left hands. I think even for those that have them but don't wear them, should wear them to the interview not to raise any flags or have unnecessary excuses.

Same as JenT and no one has every questioned the validity of our marriage based on the fact that we don't share the same last name :)

Actually, no one has questioned the validity of our marriage period...

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

We considered even combining our names... Rodrigowitz just didn't quite sound right though. :) In the end, I am hanging on to my name for now and not adding on another one. My mother did not change her name, and that has affected my decision in two ways. #1 It was the norm that I grew up with and #2 at birth I therefore got both her last name and my dad's last name, so I don't want a third last name. That's just too many names and the one I have already doesn't fit on most forms.

Anyway, we have little rings but no American engagement ring. I don't foresee a problem.

I don't think there will be a problem with USCIS as far as these concerns go.

Me personally? I cannot wait to change my name and wear a ring. I hyphenated before, and TO ME it always felt like this 'barrier'...as if I was clinging onto one thing that separated me from his clan, lol. With D, I will be proud to carry his name & is a sign of the fact that we are a family, not this yours mine and ours stuff.

But that's just me...

I still dunno what to do... Where I am from we don't change our last names when married, it's not that common. Nobody in my family has changed it and I feel weird about it myself... Maybe I'll decide that day LOL

We will be getting some wedding rings when he arrives. :)

I may add his name to mine as a second middle name, because I like my name, and I use it professionally. I will wear a ring because I like that symbol. He might not; he is in oil exploration, playing with explosives, and having a ring on his hand could be dangerous.

To the OP, do whatever feels right and suits your personality and beliefs.

For me, I wear an engagement ring and both myself and my fiance will have wedding bands. He actually really loves his ... he works with his hands, his ring is made out of tungsten carbide so he can't destroy it :)

I haven't decided on the name change issue yet. My fiance is supportive either way.

I was not asked anything about my ring at K-1 interview, even though I wanted them to ask me as my husband (fiance at the time) designed it and it is very unique.

I don't think the ring or last name is a big deal as long as you have all the other documents in order and a pof that your relationship is legite.
