  1. 1. Brat overcame a huge fundraising deficit (1:26) and won anyway. What does this mean?

    • It means Citizens United isn't as big a deal as some think. As long as people are free, no one gets to buy elections in this country. Not Koch, not Soros, not anybody.

    • Money holds less sway in smaller, more local contests. Person-to-person contact is a powerful tool. This is a good argument in favor of not having a national Presidential election at all. Keep elections local.
    • This is an anomaly. The candidate with more money usually wins, and people with money will always play those odds.

How Big Money failed to rescue Eric Cantor

By BYRON TAU and TARINI PARTI | 6/11/14 12:32 AM EDT

The darling of big Wall Street donors, the K Street business types and the Republican establishment went down in flames Tuesday, all the while crushing his no-name opponent with a 26-to-1 cash advantage in the money race.

Cantor, the House majority leader, raised nearly $5.5 million during the cycle, bolstered by investments from the American Chemistry Council, the American College of Radiology, the National Rifle Association, and the National Association of Realtors.

He lost to Dave Brat, a college professor with a $200,000 shoestring budget.

Can't bear the thought of moneyed interests having no actual power?

It keeps me up at night.

If its anti-incumbant fever then it stands a chance of shaking up the next election.. Otherwise its just an aberration.

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

"hope" as in I hope to win the lottery :)

Still in the above link he was running against six other people. One on one is a lot different than an incumbent running against six people that will split the opposition vote and keep opposition voters from showing up (seeing their candidate in single and low double digits in polling). I still have hope. Please don't take my cookie.

David Brat's victory shows primarily that Cantor could not control the "revolution" he thought he could channel. It's a bit like the Sorcerer's Apprentice - "The spirits that I called...".

Have you heard who the Democrats voted for in the primary for Governor of Nevada?

Yep, that old favourite - "None of These Candidates"

It isn't. I sure like the idea of a low budget candidate being able to take out a well funded (read: bought and paid for) member of Congress but this was nothing but an exception.

Probably right but it would e sweet to see about 80% turn over in DC. I think we would be better off if the picked random names from the Jury pool.

I heard, I admit it is a wild theory, that the dems flooded the primary up there to get Cantor out as majority leader.
