My fiancee went for his interview today in Nigeria and was told that we have to go do DNA on our 9 year old son to proof his is father . Our son was born in the u.s here and we both live together .i have his name (fiancee)on the birth certificate . Right now am so angry because the consular did not even ask for any of the hundreds of pages of proofs he had with him(call records,Facebook, chats and pictures) . Now my question is how long does a DNA takes ?how much does it cost ? Can I contact my congressman over this issue ? Would he be interviewed again ? Maybe this will make it quicker or something Am the petitioner not my son. The petition is based on fiancé visa not child . Am not scared to do DNA but am just sad this is going to take more time because we have been apart for a long time ..the consular even wrote my sons name on the paper he gave my fiancé as the petitioner.please I need advise on what to do now ..thank you all .

I suspect that it's a common thing for those items (chat logs, etc...) to not be looked at...but it's best to have them just in case. Besides, the fact that you have a child together is, I suspect, a stronger proof of your genuine relationship.

I think offense at the DNA request would be misplaced - we all pay in some ways for the previous bad actions of others. When that test comes back as a match, then the rest should be easier - this test will bolster your case.

As for the practical questions about the cost of paternity tests....I googled for some just now, looks like it could be as cheap as $150 - but I'm sure this will need to be done by approved doctors (and not an at-home kit that can be mailed in) so it'll probably cost more, but it shouldn't be THAT much.

Well if you are a citizen of US and your child was born in US why didn't you just get the baby's passport?

How were you able to take baby out the country? With just the Birth certificate?

The embassy will call you back for a DNA swapping then the results are sent to a lab in US. It cost about $4000 to $600 per test.

It takes about 2 to 4 months to get results they will call him back and all should be fine.

What is the relevance of these questions?

You will arrange to have the test through an AABB certified lab. You will report to an apporved collection place in the US if you are here and report to the embassy if in Nigeria. The lab must be AABB certified

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

What is the relevance of these questions?

The relevance is that the COs are suspicious about the son not being biologically of the couple, and thus likely suspicious of the whole relationship. It is quite unusual to ask for a DNA test on a US citizen child (assuming the child has his US passport), so the questions dwheels asked are claryfying that.

It is also confusing because the OP says that the son was born in the USA, but that they live together, but are applying for a K1.

Okay this is the weirdest but than looking at what you have said you are a couple with a 9 year old and not married and I believe the embassy doesn't believe it.

The pictures you have dod you show you and him throughout all the years especially the 9 years of the childs upbringing?

I guess they are looking at sich a great amount of time and you two don't live together and a 9 year old and you aren't` married. Nothing you can do but comply.

Dhwheels..thank you .really appreciate but you wnt believe none of the supporting documents was asked from him. We had loads and loads of pictures, call records, even property documents he bought with our child's name 8 years ago. The CO just asked him some questions he looked satisfied with all until he gave him some papers that we have to do DNA with our son .i guess I did not really front load at the beginning because I discovered this forum after I filed the petition. we will do the DNA ASAP . I just feel so sad about the whole thing .

That part was very clear. I did not understand the question about the child's passport.

OP: Like Dwheels pointed out, your child with your fiancé is why a DNA is being asked for, 9yrs is a long time, from the documents you submitted for the K1 visa, how many time have you visit nigeria with your son? Apart from Skype and FaceTime, how many times had they spent together? I think those and more are the reason eyebrow is been raised for the DNA.

(Before someone start throwing stones)

My wife came to Nigeria and she was pregnant when she left, and before my interview we have had our first daughter, she was 8months old when I want for the interview, all the CO ask from me is ( is your fiancée pregnant?, in which I respond, we have a daughter now, and the he ask for pictures, gave him like 35pics and he smile and I was approved).

Do the DNA and all will be fine..

My opinion is not to get you angry, if it suit you, good, if it does not... Look away!!!!

I know you didn't. I was talking about this:

Rafael thank you .Yes we are definitely doing the DNA ..have been to Nigeria 7 times during the period .though our child visited only once for 3 months when he was just two years, he got so sick and we almost lost him and couple with the fact that he goes to school . How long will the whole process do DNA takes ? And is he going to have another interview entirely or just the result.
