POE with car - what do i need ??

I've been told over email (via the Montreal consulate) that my K-1 interview should be sometime in March. I had emailed them initially to see if a date had been assigned.

Anyhow, I am moving to SLC, Utah from Windsor, Ontario. I'll likely be doing this sometime in late March / early April. I'll be driving over in my 1995 Saturn.

What exactly do I need in order to bring my car over (w/ the intention of keeping it over there as MY car)?? I had my emission test done last year and my car failed by a tiny bit .... so I got a conditional pass.... the folks that did the test could not figure why it didn't pass. Will this be a problem?? Likely I presume. Am I going to have to pay an outrageous amount of cash so that someone can figure out what's wrong w/ my car ... and fix it so that it can pass?

I read somewhere that I have to contact Saturn in order to get a letter or something too. :help:

Saturn is a GM car so the # would be CANADA: (888) 467-6853 What the letter that you require from them slips my mind. Originally I was going to bring over my Nissan, but sold it! Nissan faxed me the letter in a few minutes with no charge. They required the VIN #.

The failing emissions thing may not be a problem now, but could be later down the road if your State that ur moving to conducts emission tests as VA does. If it barely failed, there are stuff, like an opil additive one can purchase at most auto stores, not sure how healthy it is for ur engine!!

I'm sure others that have experienced this can be of better help!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Basically you need the compliance letter from the manufacturer as well as the title (registration in Canada)...

That's about it... be sure you make them do the peperwork.. you won't be able to register your car in the US without it... and Utah isn't very close to a land POE...

Make sure you tell them the lowest resale value you can ($2,000 or so).. you'll have to pay tax on that value when you register it in Utah...

I don't know if Utah has an emmissions test in order to register your car.. I think they do though...

They do...

Don't know what to say... if you have to fix it.. you have to fix it..

But fixing it is probably cheaper than getting a new car..

thanks everyone .. that does shed some light on the situation.

Yes ... Utah does do emissons tests (as you mentioned) which I will eventually have to deal with. My main concern was just getting through customs with the proper papers .... will give good ol'GM a call tomorrow.

thanks again :)

it won't be a problem. they didn't ask me anything about my car and as i didn't have all the information straight, i didn't get the paperwork at the border and had to go to the local customs office. i was informed there that it is our responsibility to tell the border guys that you require the HSA form (the number escapes me) which you require the import letter from the manufacturer for. apparently it happens all the time as well as these fellows did 2-3 vehicles per week! it was a PITA, but if you didn't get it done at your POE you don't need a land crossing, just a customs office (the closest major airport in most cases)

hI,

THIS HAPPENED TO MY HUSBAND TOO, BUT HE EVEN MENTIONED THIS TO THE POE AND THEY TOLD HIM HE WAS ALL SET. THEN I LOOKED AT THE HS7 FORM AND THAT'S WHY I CAME HERE TO SEE WHAT WE SHOULD DO. SOOOO WE LIVE 4 HOURS FROM THE BORDER AND MAYBE 3 HOURS FROM A MOJOR AIRPORT. WHICH IS BETTER FOR US TO GO? WHAT DO WE BRING THEM OTHER THAN THE LETTER FROM THE MANUFACTURER?

THANKS,

You didn't mention if you were still in a loan situation with your car. If you are you will need to check with your loan institution to ensure that moving you and the vehicle to another country doesn't invalidate your loan agreement. Many of them will not carry your loan cross-border.

If you own your car outright, then that's not a concern.

just a heads up to you all ... I just called GM and they knew exactly what letter I was talking about when I described my 'moving to the states .. bla bla bla". however ...unlike Nissan who apparently does this for you free of charge ... the domestic folks at GM are charging me $79.50 for this golden letter! another expense to add the the list. alas ... at least this is another thing that will be taken care of prior to my move. let's cross'er off the list!
