Oath, visiting Canada

Is it feasible to visit Canada after taking the oath, but without the naturalization certificate or US passport?

Short answer, no. You need a passport, or passport card to travel by land between the United States and Canada. You need a passport to travel by air. If you are a Canadian Citizen, you can travel to Canada. The problem is that you have no proof of residency or citizenship to return to the United States since you surrender your Green Card when you take the Oath.

Why wouldn't you have your Naturalization Certificate after the Oath? You should get that the day you take the Oath and surrender your Green Card. Though even if you have the Naturalization Certificate, that isn't enough to travel between Canada and the US. Though it would work if you went on a cruise I believe.

Sometimes the State Department has representatives at naturalisation ceremonies to immediately process your US passport applications, so you receive your naturalisation certificate and then immediately hand it over to them a few minutes later, not receiving it back until a few weeks down the line when they return your documents to you.

Perhaps I should have thought this question over a little more before responding. It seems the issue will be that your Certificate of Naturalization will be out with your US Passport application? This is the one short period of time during the whole process where you won't be able to travel internationally. Though if you expedite your passport, it should only be three weeks at most. You may also be able to get a walk in appointment at a Passport Agency and get the US Passport the same day. Though this may require you to travel quite a distance depending on the closest agency office.

No - I assume you want to be able to return back home to the US? How do you plan to prove your status coming in if you don't have a US Passport (since your GC is no longer).

Your Naturalization certificate is not enough - they make that very clear at the Oath ceremony - you cannot travel using your US naturalization cert.

Wait to travel until you have a US document proving who you are and what your status is when returning to the US - that is your US passport.

Is it feasible to visit Canada after taking the oath, but without the naturalization certificate or US passport?
